Need help with Tetra Whisper impellers

I have a Tetra Whisper PF 30 and PF 40. They use the same size impeller. I am trying to source some cheap replacement impellers as they get noisy over time. The problem is, online, they are labeled in anything but comprehensive ways and can't tell which fits what. I've noticed they are color...

    Better lighting

I have a standard 20 gallon tank with low light plants, just some crypts. I'd like to give them a boost in growth so naturally that means better lighting. I am currently using an Aqueon light fixture with a generic T8 full spectrum light bulb, 15w. There aren't any larger light bulbs. What...

    Anyone into hermit crabs?

gzeiger, thanks for the input. Hermits do burrow, completely, when they moult. Other than that, you are right, they are climbers, so I will provide them the means to do so. My plan is that once the fiddlers die off, I will completely eliminate the brackish part. But what I want to find out if I...

    Anyone into hermit crabs?

I realize I'm pushing it off-topic here :) I'll try to keep this short and sweet because I have a tendency to write on and on and on. I kinda want to try something new and expand my experience and knowledge. I love fiddler and red claw crabs so naturally hermits would be the next best thing :) I...

What critter would you get if ...

My little crabitat's life may have come to an end. My wife and I moved into our new home and I am wondering if I can tear down the crabitat. For you crab experts/keepers out there, do you think 5 fiddlers [2 males, 3 females] would do OK in a 20 gallon tank? The footprint is a typical 24x12...

Unknown defficiency and black algae trouble

I admit I've been light on potassium dosing, I haven't been following directions which say 2-3 times per week. I will dose 3 times then instead of 2. The black algae stuff is ... interesting. I've read it can be due to low nitrates and possibly low oxygen. The only thing I can tell you is that...

Unknown defficiency and black algae trouble

Here are some details: Tank - 10 gallons Substrate - Eco complete Lighting: 10w, 8 hours a day from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The tank is next to a window [not in front] and there is a curtain in between so direct light is at a minimum, if any Plants - java fern, java moss and a bunch of crypts, some...

Best fish for 5 gallon aquarium?

I would put NO neon tetras in there, no tetras for that matter. They may be small, but they are very active fish and need the space, not to mention shoaling so you need at least 6. I had neons in a 5.5 and they did horribly, they swam back and forth and against the sides of the glass. Even my 10...

    non-fish animals

They won't eat it, they can't even if they wanted to. All they have are fans so they can't quite grab it :) I usually let mine in because the ghost shrimp always enjoyed munching on it. In a matter of very few days it'd be completely gone. You can take it out.

Best fish for 5 gallon aquarium?

I wouldn't get a dwarf gourami, personally. I had one in a 10 gallon and was so active, even THAT tank seemed small. I would get a honey gourami instead, they are smaller. My dwarf died and got a honey gourami which is smaller and seems to fit and fare much better in my 10 gallon. Know that...

    fiddler crabs

Phoenix, crabs have the reputation of escaping because, for the most part, they are trying to get a breath of fresh air and can't, in a completely submerged environment. I'm sure you know this but with no access to air, they slowly drown over time. I have a red claw crab in a 10 gallon tank...

    non-fish animals

18 sounds good, there should be plenty of detrius and such in it. Plants will help, especially the water chemistry, not to mention make it a nice looking tank ;) If you go planted, I personally recommend Seachem's line: Flourish, Flourish Excel, Flourish Potassium and Phosphorous. Possibly...

    non-fish animals

How old is your tank? If you see the bamboos scavenging on the bottom like mine were doing in these videos I took a while back: then you should try target feeding. Scavenging means they are not getting enough food. Generally, bamboo shrimp die like clams. Over the course of months they slowly...

    non-fish animals

karackle, the type of current you want is one that's going from the top of the aquarium to the bottom, not the other way around. You want it that way because the current would carry food to the fan shrimp. What type of filter do you have? I have a pretty simple but efficient Tetra Whisper hang...

what shrimp for a 5 gallon

Ha! I wish. They are available ... as long as you buy them online, or not just a lot in Nebraska. No LFS seems to carry them :bawl:
