    Terracotta drain tile,

    Terracotta should be ok in a fresh water tank (salt??). It would be nice to know what flowed through it back in the day.

    Covering the intake with foam Tetra internal filter

    I have coarse sponges sold by Aquarium CoOp. They fit over the intake pipe.
