    Fluval 405

I have a 405 and I'd say it takes me about 40 min on average to get the POS primed after i do a water change. I hate this thing. I'm not sure what the "primer pump" does on your 405, but on mine, all it does is start building up air pressure on the supply side. When the air pressure gets high...

A few questions about snails, shrimp, and anacharis

I have a 75 gal with 6 bala sharks, 4 yoyo loaches, 1 "rubberlip pleco", and a 7-8 inch african cichlid. The cichlid will be finding a new home as soon as I find a responsible owner who will take him/her(it was a "gift" from a friend who didn't want it anymore). I realize I am overstocked for...

    Bala Shark in trouble?

I could actually see the rock that was stuck in his mouth (I should have said that in my initial post). Anyway, I had decided that I was going to net the fish and try to extract the rock with a pair of tweezers. I'm pretty sure that when I was in the process of netting, he started shaking back...

    Bala Shark in trouble?

One of my bala sharks apparently has a rock stuck in its mouth. Is there anything I can do to help it? How long should I wait to try to do something. I'd say this happened within the last 2 hours because I didn't notice it when I was doing my water change. The bala is about 4 inches long...

    Diatoms* Getting Very Irritating.

I might be a little late chiming in on this one but, I had been having the same problem recently. I finally decided to get some different lighting. I tried pure actinic because I had heard that plants and algae couldn't use that type of light. I got home and tried them but I did not like the...

    cichlid ID please

I think I found it on cichlid-forum psuedotropheus crabro (bumble bee cichlid) www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=845 if you go to the second picture "large male" it's a dead ringer

    "new" tank with high ph

I think I agree with fishyfanatic. I certainly don't want to have to start adding various chemicals to the tank to lower the ph. I'll continue testing the water and doing my normal pwc's (which is once a week). If the ph continues to be in the high range I may even add the holey rock and...

    cichlid ID please

I recently got this tank and cichlid from my buddy. He didn't know what kind of cichlid it was. I'm assuming he bought it from one of those "assorted cichlid" tanks. He or she is about 3 years old and about 6 inches long. Any help or opinions are appreciated.

    "new" tank with high ph

I tested the ph again today and it was back at 8.8. I also had filled a cup with tap water yesterday and let it sit out over night. The tap water (which had tested at 7.5 right from the tap) was at 8.4 today. I'm starting to think my tap water is the problem. I have tried posting pics of...

    "new" tank with high ph

Okay, the texas holey rock is getting removed right now and I will continue with my water changes and tests. Thanks so much for the help

    "new" tank with high ph

So I recently acquired a 55 gallon from my buddy. He had it set up at his house for about 3 years. The tank had aquarium gravel, a large piece of red lava rock, a large piece of texas holey rock, and about 10-15 stones that he had found outside somewhere. The only fish he had in there was a...

    Simple diy closed loop

I don't understand how a correctly setup siphon overflow could ever result in water ending up on the floor. The whole idea is that its an "overflow" so if the water in the tank gets too high, it will overflow into the stand pipe and go to the sump. The siphon just carries waterfrom the tank to...

    Yoyo loaches

I'm pretty sure they're bred in captivity but not in aquariums. From what I've read, there are quite a few fish farms oversees from where many of the aquarium fish are raised. I know bala sharks have a spawning ritual that requires a lot of room for swimming very quickly so an aquarium...

    moonlight power supply question

Well I finally got a chance to try it. Striped was positve. Thanks all for the input. I haven't hooked up the whole system yet. I'll probably get working on that tonight.

    moonlight power supply question

That's what I thought too. I'll just wire one with a resistor like that and see if it lights up. Worst case senario, I'm out one led.

    moonlight power supply question

So I have everything I need to put together my moonlights but I don't have a multimeter at the moment. All I need to know is, which wire is positive and which is negative on the power supply. One of the wires is solid black and the other is black with a white stripe. Is there a standard for...

    best tank mates?

I am thinking of adding some loaches to my tank. It's a 70 gal with 6 balas and 6 tiger barbs. My lfs has skunk loaches and zebra loaches. I would actually prefer to go with yoyo's but none are available locally and i don't want to have them shipped. I have read that skunk loaches can get...

    Gravel Question?

I think those measurements sound a little big. There are 231 cu inches per gallon. So if your tank was 32 inches long and 18 wide ... it could only be 12 inches tall. If thats the case though and you wanted to use flourite..... 32x18x2=1152cu inches. 1152/400 =2.88 15 pound bags. 2.88 x...

    Gravel Question?

What are the dimensions of your 30 gal? Density will vary with the type of substrate you choose. I just read that a 15 pound bag of flourite will fill a typical 10 gal tank 2" high. (10inx20inx2in = 400 cu inches). I hope this helps.

    need some opinions, please...

How well does krylon stick to glass? I would like to go with a black background on my 70 gallon.(we will be moving soon so it would be great time to do it) I was going to go with a stick on background that uses oil between the glass and the background.(I can't think of the name of the company)...

    Acrylic Tanks vs. Glass

Can anyone quantify the weight difference? I don't know because I've only had glass tanks, but I always hear about how much lighter acrylic is. I would think that would only be useful for moving an empty tank. When I think about how much a full 90 gallon tank weighs I would think the weight of...
