Fish Laying on His Side, Fins Out, Tinted From Blue to Red

Thanks, and thanks for bringing that to mind. I'm not sure if he had a disease, but I suppise it's better to play it safe.

Fish Laying on His Side, Fins Out, Tinted From Blue to Red

...yeah. He's dead. I wish I could figure out what happened, what I did wrong...I made some mistakes, but none of them should have been fatal... I...guess I'll take him to the lake as his final resting place tomorrow. Then...idunno. I'll be out tomorrow. I have all this Betta equipment and no...

Fish Laying on His Side, Fins Out, Tinted From Blue to Red

So I've been posting previously about my fish, Zeke, on this thread. I moved him into a new tank after he took up tailbiting, but he hasn't really been recovering. Mostly been resting on his side at the bottom of the tank, changing places every now and then. I think he's been eating, but I've...

Update on Zeke: Still Alive, Still Not Moving Much

Thanks. I just got a new thing of Betta food for him too, and it's one of those 2-in-1 flake/pellet switches. I also have some freeze-dried prawn I think? But I stopped giving it to him as much because I think the excess really gummed up the tank.

Update on Zeke: Still Alive, Still Not Moving Much

Okay, I've gone through the other tests. My Nitrate test is showing up neon yellow, which should indicate that I have no significant nitrates, and I'm seeing clear blue from my nitrite test which also indicates I'm clean. Apparently I have no means to test chlorine now, but the strips I'd used...

Update on Zeke: Still Alive, Still Not Moving Much

To catch anyone unaware up to speed, I inherited a Betta from my aunt, and I've never cared for one before. He's been pretty lively up until about a month ago, where he'd began damaging his fins - presumably tailbiting, based on what I'd researched on the pattern and abruptness of it. As a...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

Ohhhh, so that's what you meant... Well I guess that's nothing new. Businesses seem to have been exploiting the average pet owner's lack of understanding about their pets from the jump. But it is alarming how much more...overt it is in these instances.

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

Yeah, Aiken Drum helped me find that out. I'm really glad I didn't put any in. I'm sure there's some use for it, but I'm not sure why they'd even market something like this to Bettas...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

Thanks, Colin. I think that with the help of you and Aiken Drum, it's probably a safe assumption that, because I dramatically underestimated regular tank changes and failed to notice I had no means to test for ammonia, this is most likely the result of poor tank quality - since he appears to not...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

It's a little late for that, but I'm glad I waited on using any of it. Thanks for letting me know beforehand.

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

...you know, now that you mention it? I can't find it either. I swore there was a medicine independent of BettaFix that was specifically for curing bacterial infections, but now I can't find it. Maybe I just dreamed it? I honestly don't know...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

Alright. You mentioned the water change kit last time too. I haven't picked it up yet, but I have today off so I'm going to physically go out and buy it instead of waiting for it to be shipped. Then I can know for certain what I'm dealing with. I'll see if I can get some BettaZing while I'm...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

I'm not sure if I do. I have strips that test pH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Carbonate Root, Hardness, Chlorine, Alkalinity, Iron, and Copper. But not explicitly ammonia, from the looks of it. Should I go out and get some that do?

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

It's only been a week since the change, I believe. I'm changing the water today. I haven't noticed any significant presence of nitrites or chlorine yet, but I guess that's to be expected. It is a ten-gallon tank with one Betta in it. I forgot to mention this, I did purchase an Eco Biostone. I...

Transferred Betta to New Tank; Still Not Doing Well

So I recently tranferred my fish, Zeke, into a larger tank because I thought he might be feeling bored with his old surroundings in a smaller 3.5 gallon tank. Before then, he was spending a lot of time laying on the bottom of the tank, and not visibly eating food (tbough I had seen him flit up...

    High pH in Betta Tank

I can post some more pictures, sure. https://imgur.com/a/vlgWG5w He's only been in the tank for a few hours, so it probably stands to reason he doesn't feel comfortable yet. But he's already looking much less sedintary than he was before. I replaced decorations in the last tank to softer ones...

Hi, I'm Doug and I Have a Betta Named Zeke

Thank you. I actually just got him transferred to a new tank today. I'm a bit more experienced in what to look for this time around. His old tank had very hard water, as a result of the tap water I used. I tried to treat it, but it was still in the red. This time I got much, much softer water...

    High pH in Betta Tank

I've never noticed any kind of salty taste in my tap water, but I may just also not be good at noticing things like that. I ended up getting distilled water and adding it to my tank, and I've already noticed a marked improvement in the kH and pH levels. It's not quite where I'd want it to be...

    High pH in Betta Tank

Ohhhh...that would be the one difference between my water sources too...you might be onto something. Do you think I should get a few more gallons of distilled water? Or just dump my tank completwly and start fresh?

    High pH in Betta Tank

Alright, I'll bookmark this and try to follow these guidelines going forward. I think fish-in will be the way I end up going for this. And I'll be sure to get a liquid test kit for more accurate measurements. Thank you for all the help! I think I'm ready to start the process.

    High pH in Betta Tank

I think that will be the plan. I'll buy a couple gallons of distilled water in a few hours here and change out the water.

    High pH in Betta Tank

I think it would probably be smarter of me to go for the Fish-In method. I am a new tank owner, and it's likely I'm not going to get everything right with Fishless from the sounds of it. On top of that, my ADHD means that I can struggle with consistency at times, and that sounds like it'll work...

    High pH in Betta Tank

I'll do my best to answer all these questions, but I am certainly still inexperienced. I understand nothing really about the nitrogen cycle currently. My Betta is still presently in the old tank. I want everytbing to be right before adding him into the environment. Especially if there's still...

Hi, I'm Doug and I Have a Betta Named Zeke

I'm not sure how often I'll post here - I'm not active in a lot of communities to begin with. But my name is Doug, and I've kind of been thrown into the deep end in maintaining an aquarium. I inherited a Betta from my aunt who didn't feel like she was giving the guy the care he needed. It...

    High pH in Betta Tank

I'm new to owning a Betta, inheriting him from my aunt. His tailfin's been badly damaged, and from the research I've done, this seems to be the result of tailbiting. And I have to guess that this is because he's been bored in his 3.5 gallon tank. So I splurged and got him a 10-gallon decked out...
