I successfully performed hypo with a hydrometer. Maybe not the best but I was like you and had no time and had to purchase a QT tank, heater, ect. and was tapped on money at the time. You could at least start lowering your SG slowly until your refractometer arives.

nothing worked for me except hypo.. skip everything else. Get the hypo started.

the article doesnt mention this but you should do it in a quarantine tank and not your main. There are many many posts on this. Just keep reading the sick fish section and ask any questions you may have. I think most of us have been through ick.

I suspect the tang was sick to begin with. I never had any luck with the baby blue tangs. They always ended up on their side and wouldnt eat. I tried two then decided to get a medium sized which is doing great. I just dont think a healthy tang would have got caught by a hermit, even a larger...

You only need metal halide for high light demanding corals, some would even disagree on that. For fish only you can use just about any light you want but brighter will make some fish look better. What are you looking to keep in your tank?

Trade that mandarin in for a dwarf angel. It probably wont make it that size tank with 45lbs of live rock.

I think everyone goes through this with a new goby, I've seen a few post anyway. When I added a watchman goby I had the same concern but after a few days it got better. The goby will stir it up but eventually the sand will be clean in a way and free of all the dust and crap clouding your tank.

sounds normal to me. Is it bubbling then overflowing or is water just running into the cup? With dirty water it will fill quite fast.

I could be wrong but I believe the smokey appearance is lead or other metal in the glass. You can get whats called starfire glass that is clearer... at a price. Or acrylic.
