    crushed coral substrate....doomed????

Four weeks in and things couldn't be better. I had a bit of a diatom bloom, but that lasted only a week. Sand is sugar white now, thanks to my super duper cleaning crew. Lots of critters in the sand and on the LR, so I think the transition went well. I'd certainly recommend this method to...

    The green stuff

Okay, does coraline algae come in green? This stuff is all over this rock and is starting to appear on some other live rocks in my son's 10G nano. It's smooth, bright green, encrusting like coraline, and quite pleasing to the eye. I just don't want to let it go if it's a problem. :D Cool...

    crushed coral substrate....doomed????

Yeah, the boiling water thing was kinda odd. I also didn't bother with the heaters, considering I am in TX and room temp is 77, thanks to a generous donation to TXU Energy. :x The nylon balls of substrate were pretty cool, and very easy to do. I made my balls a little bigger than the article...

    crushed coral substrate....doomed????

http://www.fishwhisperer.homestead.com/articles.html Here is the article on how to change your CC out with sand. I did it last weekend and it was a snap. Took out the LR, scooped out the substrate, made some nylon footballs, put those back in, added 20# LS to about 60# Aragonite, put the LR...

    Tank Placement Question

For some reason, I got the impression that this room was seldom used. My mistake. Sounds good to me. My stereo system is in the same room with my fish, and it gets rather loud. The fish could care less, they even kinda like Pat Green.

    Going REEF. OH NO!!

I'm going to take this slowly. I want to see what pops out of my live rock, probably pick up a mushroom or two, star polyps, some feather dusters, mostly stuff that's not too light hungry. I know that I will eventually have to go MH, but that's down the road a bit. :fadein:

    Going REEF. OH NO!!

Those retro kits scare me a little. When you buy those things, do they come with a diagram of sorts to help you with installation? Opening a box with a just a bunch of parts is intimidating. I thought the prebuilt hood was a pretty good deal, although I haven't priced out the DIY option yet...

    Tank Placement Question

I would strongly advise against putting your tank where there is less than the most traffic in your house. Our hobby needs to be seen to be appreciated. If it's in the main traffic area in your house, it will get more attention by both your family, and by YOU, the reefkeeper. Don't put it in...

    Some kind of bug????

Was it snailish but without a big snail shell? Stomatella varia are very snail like but have a flat, form fitting shell. If it had legs and ran around crazy it could be Thomusgrenusflagellate spermatoa, in which case it's going to annoy you to no end. HTH. :D

    Going REEF. OH NO!!

I'm converting my 75G FOWLR to a reef, slowly. I have about 40 pounds of LR that have been in my tank for a couple years or more. I swapped out my CC substrate with a 2" sand bed this weekend. I mixed in 20# of LS with about 40# of Aragonite sand, and also kept 2 small football sized stocking...

    Curing Live Rock, How Long?

Most of the LR I have purchased has been cured. Over the weekend a LFS got in a shipment of Tonga LR that was really cool, however it needed some curing, it was kinda dank. Anyway, I bought 20# and brought it home and put it into buckets with PH's to "cure". Water stunk pretty bad Saturday...

    little slug things

Stomatella varia ~Stomatella varia~ Cooool! I found a couple of these guys in my new 10G critter tank. THANKS for helping identify. I have been trying to get a picture, but it's easier said than done.

    Cleaning Crew

My 10G is ready for a cleaning crew. I have 10# LR, 10# LS mixed with aragonite sand for a 2" DSB. Using a HOB filter and an extra PH for circulation. Water looks great, tests good, 0 Ammonia and Nitrites, Nitrates are up a bit, water change helped that out. I want some hermits to start...

Livestock load? Is there a rule of thumb?

My 75G currently houses Yellow Tang 3.5 inches, Purple Tang 3.5, Humu Trigger 3, and one damsel 1.5. Steve mentioned earlier that this might be a bit crowded, while I always thought that this was a very light load on a system of this size. I realize that the Humu needs to go, but is there a...

    Nitrates are up, any suggestions?

My test kit may very well be out of date, but even if it is off, the cyano is a sign that the nitrates are high. I'll replace the test kit, as well as get an independent reading from a friend. If the CC is a problem, what is the solution, replacing it with sand? Wouldn't that be doing more...

    Nitrates are up, any suggestions?

Feeding twice a day with a custom pellet mix from the LFS, and supplementing with a bit of sushinori for the tangs. This tank has been up and running for 5 years. The yellow tang I have had since the tank's inception, the purple for 3 years, the damsel about a year and the humu about 8 months...

    Nitrates are up, any suggestions?

Tested my water source, 0 Nitrates, so that's eliminated as the problem. I would think that with the limited livestock load in this tank that nitrates wouldn't be a problem. ???

    Nitrates are up, any suggestions?

75G FOWLR, Yellow Tang, Purple Tang, Damsel and 3 inch Humu. Large wet/dry filter full of bio-balls, skimmer, 4 power heads. Fighting the dreaded cyano-bacteria. Did a Nitrate test and voila, therein lies the culprit. Any suggestions on how to reduce the nitrates? I did a 30% water change...
