    Switching from Freshwater to Saltwater

ro is reverse osmosis water distilled water is the store equivalent burrowing inverts dont like black sand much, it is harder to keep clean looking too compared to traditional sand. The fine and sometimes magnetic materials in the sand can harm some fish that pass sand through their gills, the...

    Clownfish and seahorse?

You are both right. Wild seahorses need live food, captive bred are usually trained on dead foods. You are much better off getting a captive bred cost wise. The clownfish will compete with the seahorses for food, so it will be harder to feed the seahorses, or you would have to spot feed them...

How do you get purple coraline algae to grow?

it depends on the species, but for the pink and purple encrusting coralline species normally found in the hobby I agree with you. Some species just bleach in bright lighting, Peyssonelia species were this way for me at least.

Came home to an unwelcome surprise

Also when you kill off cyano or other nuisance algae en masse like that they will rob the water of oxygen as a part of the respiration process when they die. Or rather overload it with co2. Anyway they can create deadspots, so that is another reason to siphon out as much as you can prior to...

    Rust in the water.

It could help. Cyano is particularly fond of iron, it also makes green algae color up and certain species of macroalgae are rich in iron suggesting they require it for strong growth. hair algae, ulva and other fleshy or stringy green algae like members of the Enteromorpha family use it. It...

    Which snail to choose?

abalones are temperate species usually, you would need to run a chiller or they would die pre-maturely on you. Tropical large snails are things like conchs and larger astreae species, like the Astreae tuber. Queen conchs are too big, they bulldoze around and climb on rocks etc... Fighting conchs...

    Zoa Rescue

I would remove the GSP from the zoas mat. GSP is really easy to frag, just find a place you can get your finger under it and pull it back like carpet, the mat should stay fairly intact. Worst comes to worse you damage the overgrown part, it will come back in a week. :)

    refugium contents

If the sand bed is deep enough to act as a remote deep sand bed that would help to reduce nitrates. It would have to be fairly deep to create an anaerobic environment. I think it is easier to just keep chaeto in there though too, with bare bottom. Very easy to clean out that way, skip anything...

    Water parameters for a newb

I think the carbon media in a bag is more effective than the pads. I used to use pads too, but the difference is really noticeable when you switch over.

My Dottyback is eating my Hermit Crabs.

    Centipede type crawlers

amphipods are generally considered good. not all fish will bother with amphipods if they are fed regularly. I feel like if I get lazy on feeding the pod population gets picked on more, but usually the clowns can care less. It depends on the species of fish, my sixline likes to hunt them...

Why do my corals keep dying??!

try starting with easy to care for softies at first, once you get everything else caught up and do a few water changes. figure out the needs of the corals before you get them will make it easier, and may save you a lot of time/hassle. (You should probably dose iodine with certain corals, if you...

My PH Has Dropped 1.5 In Two Days

sometimes air exchange in the room and surface current can fix a ph problem. Really, it seems it would be trivial but it isn't...fresh air from outside agitated through a water lift....is ideal, but just opening up the windows running the fan and agitating the surface will go far.
