    Here's a good one...

Has anyone gone directly from salt to fresh? I am starting today when I get rid of the last of the salt critters.

    Here's a good one...

I am going to have a Clown Knife and an Oscar, maybe topped off with some Pictus Cats. That's what I had back when I had fresh before. I am thinking a plant or two might be nice since I have some good lighting. Something easy like a Java Fern. I was more wondering about the cycle with all the...

    Here's a good one...

After a few years of fighting red sand, I am gong back to fresh water. What are some of you recommendations? I have a 180gal currently set up for FOWLR. I can't get rid of my live rock, so I was thinking, drain the tank, fill with tap water and let it run for a week and see what happens.

One week w/o fish and still...

Well, the lights have been off for two weeks now. I have tried using the stuff that kills cyano, I have tried gobies, and I have siphoned the sand hundreds of times. My nitrates are down to 5ppm and the stuff is still coming back. It just doesn't make sense. Kinda over it. Maybe it's time to...

One week w/o fish and still...

I got a few green chromis. When the lights came on today for the first time in over a week, the sand started to go red almost immediately. I haven't checked the nitrates, but at this point, I don't think it matters.

One week w/o fish and still...

I will try trimming it tomorrow. Skimmer has slowed down in the last few days, not getting much out of it now. The super Skimmer runs pretty wet. It's very finicky, but for $100 it's a lot easier to deal with than parting with over $400 for a new one. Phosphates have been zero for at least a...

One week w/o fish and still...

Well, I tried to squeeze it out, but it didn't feel like I got anything out of it. What do you mean by trimming? Like my hedges? Do I put the trimmings back in the sump? How much should I have for my tank? My nitrates have dropped to between 5 and 10ppm since I posted this, but I am concerned...

One week w/o fish and still...

I have enough current to blow the sand around. That didn't help. When I got rid of the fish, I turned off the lights. As soon as I turned them on, it started to show up again. The bulbs are less than 3 months old. I have tested my source water several times and it always comes up 0ppm across the...

One week w/o fish and still...

...my sand is red. I have a 180gal with a 40gal sump. Super Skimmer rated for up to 200gal, 2 Fluval 405s with no sponge, just carbon and a basketball size ball of chaeto. I forget the brand of return pump, but it is supposed to be rated at 1800gal per hour. My phosphates and ammonia read zero...

    Wanted: Wanted: large saltwater fish

I want to add a new fish to my 180, but it needs to be big or it will be food. I would prefer someone local to Orange County, CA. Thanks!

    Overflow box noise

I went ahead and got the Durso. All is well. I wish I would have found them two years ago when I set up the tank.

    Overflow box noise

I have plenty of room. How quiet is it? Do the dogs do ok in the overflow box? I can't hear mine at all with the foam, but it's so much work to clean it every day.

    Overflow box noise

My box is built into the inside of the tank. The big noise problem comes from how far the water falls. Any other ideas? I may end up with the "plastic cup" method. Do you have some more pics of that?

    Overflow box noise

What are you people doing to quiet the water noise of the overflow box? I tried bio balls foam and a riser tube. Foam seems to do the best job, but I'm afraid of the nitrate levels rising if I don't clean it everyday or so.

    Basic Temp Question

I keep mine at 82 as well. It's really stable there. I have no A/C and that's one of the reasons I keep it that warm. When it gets hot, the swing in temp isn't as drastic. It was suggested that I keep a fan on the water surface. The other thing I do is freeze a gal. of R/O and drop it in the...

    Hot weather

Yeah, it's stable at 82. Like I said in the original post, it's only a problem about two weeks a year. That was the deciding factor to keeping it that warm. It keeps the change far less severe when it gets this hot. The fan did get the temp back down to 82 overnight, and I am gonna drop the...

    Hot weather

I ran a fan last night and got the temps back down to 82. I am going to put in a 1gal. bottle of frozen r/o in around noon and see if that keeps it within reason. My cow fish and my starfish are the only ones that seem to be affected. The starfish is eating, the cow is not. I know it sounds...

    Hot weather

Well, I have run my tanks at 82 for over ten years. Everyone does really well until it gets this hot outside.

    Hot weather

We live at the beach. No a/c. We don't need it here except about two weeks a year. I normally run the tank around 82 degrees, it's at almost 88 now.

    Hot weather

I have a 180gal. that for 11 months out of the year stays the same temp. When summer rolls around my water temps go up around 4 to 6 degrees. I am just not willing to spend the $700 for a chiller for one month out of the year. Does anyone here have any ideas on how I can keep the temps down? The...

    Fish names

My Copper Banded Butterfly is "Tweaker". He is prone to fits of darting around and swimming upside down. My Imperator is "Blue" after the guy from Old School. We have a large clown named "marlin"... of course. Our stripped damsels are " Cell Block 5" cuz there are 5 of 'em. Our bird wrasse is...

    Can starfish get ich?

Yeah, I get confusing sometimes. I am gong to set up a tank and put the rock and starfish in it and treat the main tank. It seems easier than catching all the fish since I would have to move the rock to get them anyways. At least this way, we don't have an empty tank in the living room and a...

    Can starfish get ich?

I talked to a knowledgeable kid at my LFS and he says it's a "fish only" parasite. Started dropping the salinity tonight and will move my rock and starfish to the quarantine tank tomorrow.

    Can starfish get ich?

I just transfered all my fish to a new tank and they are all getting ich. I am thinking of using the old tank for a hospital, doing the hypo treatment and leaving all the rock, hermits and starfish in the main tank to keep it running. Think it will work?
