    Fresh, Salt or both?

heh, yeah. i'm about to go buy 3 more 10's, but they're for betta spawning/growouts, so i'm not sure they count 8)

    Fresh, Salt or both?

hey all, slightly new to the forum and figured i'd post a little;) i keep freshwater tanks, i don't have the guts or the money to get started on salt (and probably will never have the money because it all goes towards my freshwater fish LOL). currently i have 11 tanks: 2 gallon unfiltered...

What part of California are you from?

hi all - i just moved to southern california (camp pendleton specifically, near fallbrook/oceanside) from florida and joined the forum. i wanted to introduce myself and say hi to everyone ;) i'm into freshwater fishkeeping...i've been heavily into bettas for several years now, have done a...

    Gourami Fans Speak up!

i love gouramis too, but unfortunately (or fortunately, whichever way you lean) i love bettas more...and since the two really can't be safely kept together, the bettas win. a tank full of gouramis can be stunning, but a tank full of female bettas in every color of the rainbow is much more...

(PLEASE READ! im new and i really need help!!!) UPDATE

oscar, i said: "final thing - remember, (and i don't mean this as a slam to pet store people, really), most fish store employees aren't highly educated on fish, especially if it's a chain store." i think the key point in your rebuttal is that you OWN a SMALL fish store. i've found some very...

    Introduction & Betta Death

i agree, 3 or more females is definately the way to go. here are a few tips i've found effective when adding new females to a take that already has females: try to "redecorate" right before you add the new girl/girls. this sort of breaks up the feeling of territory and ownership the old...

New tank water is behaving weird: keeps getting acidic

i'm also the kind of person that hates to mess with pH if it can be helped. however, when you have extremely soft water (mine doesn't even register on the test scale - one drop in my vial and it's the color it's supposed to turn - i believe it's less than 17.9 ppm on both gh and kh) my pH...

New tank water is behaving weird: keeps getting acidic

just regular old seashells - just make sure they're not painted or anything. luckily i live about 30 minutes from the beach, so i can just drive down and pick some up whenever i need them...like someone else mentioned, you should be able to get them from a craft store if you aren't lucky enough...

(PLEASE READ! im new and i really need help!!!) UPDATE

if the ammonia is off the charts, i'd do a small water change (like maybe a gallon) while vaccuuming the gravel probably every day for a couple of days until your ammonia drops a bit (i don't know what off the charts is specifically, but it's probably too high ;)). don't do a huge change...

New tank water is behaving weird: keeps getting acidic

actually, you probably have extremely soft water...if you have a low kh and gh then your water has very little buffering capacity. this means that even if you add chemicals to raise your pH, your water can't "buffer" itself and the pH will go up and down (there aren't enough minerals in soft...

    blue gourami dwarf with popeye

well, like i said, i believe whether it's contagious or not depends on the cause of the popeye. i mean, if it's caused by a parasite like eye flukes, yeah, it's probably going to be at least mildly contagious. if it was caused by nasty water conditions, probably not (although other fish can...

    blue gourami dwarf with popeye

well, i think it depends on what caused the popeye whether it will be contagious or not...popeye is really more a symptom of a problem rather than a disease in and of itself. i believe (in my experience at least) popeye is usually caused by poor water conditions. dwarf gouramis are fairly...

(PLEASE READ! im new and i really need help!!!) UPDATE

well, i think there are a few things possibly going on here... first off, i think you were very overstocked for a 6 gallon, especially when you had the danios. i'm not a big fan of the one inch of fish per gallon rule, but it's decent to use as a rough guideline, and you were way over that...
