10 Gallon Low Tech Photo Journal

I bought this locally at "The Wet Spot" in Portland, OR. They always have a great and ever changing selection of fresh plants.

10 Gallon Low Tech Photo Journal

I have purposely chosen very small tetras for my tank. I have read that Tetras, being slender bodied fish, have a smaller bio load on an aquarium. And according to this database on another site... Tetra Size List - Tropical Fish Forums ...both the Ember Tetra and the Green Neon Tetra are...

    October FW contest submissions

Lola, L O L A Lola. This is my Albino long fin Bristlenose baby (Ancistrus sp.), about 2 inches long now. I feed him/her blanched zucchini. My tank is a Tetra tank with a stable pH of 6.5 with lots of wood and plants, a "black water" tank. Named after The Kinks song, 'Lola'.

    Tiny Tetras.

I have a tank for small Tetras. I have only Ember Tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae) and Green Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon simulans). My LFS has some Jellybean Tetras (Lepidarchus adonis) right now; I have never seen or had them. I am tempted. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are...

Well, I have plenty of baby Ramshorns! I may try one, but I am still tempted to get a very small mystery snail at the tropical fish store. The have some that are about ¼" for 30¢. If it gets too big, I can move it into a larger tank, either my quarantine tank or the "big" one.

To answer several of you... I understood that Ramshorn Snails are hermaphrodites and a single one can breed many more. Is this not the case? (Still learning.) I did see that lightbulb tank on-line somewhere. Glad to share this with you all and thanks for looking and for your comments!

Yes, I could , but one ramshorn makes many more...

Here is a "planting" I made with some dwarf Sagetaria, a Rush gleaned from my garden and a plantlet of Windlov Java Fern floating. The substrate is black onyx sand with a little bit of laterite; no snails, fish, shrimp or any filtration. The container is actually a very flat tulip vase, only...

    Instant cycling?

And I have added a few fish just moments ago. Thanks for your advice!

Thanks for the advice. Perhaps I will put in a feeder Zebra Danio or two.

    Instant cycling?

Please forgive a :n00b: question. I think I know, but I have to ask. I am setting up a very small tank as a quarantine tank for 4 new fish I want. I have taken the well used filter out of my Betta tank and placed it in the new set-up. Can I assume the tank is "instantly cycled" and will be...

question please on tank with a chip

I would suggest that... a) If the chip is a flake off the front surface of the glass, it is OK. b) If it is gouge on the edge, there might be a chance of a stress fracture that you can not see and with the added pressure of the water may spread like a rock chip in a windshield occasionally...

Photo period. (How long is good?)

There are some really good points and opinions here. I hope this thread becomes (and is useful) to the community!

Photo period. (How long is good?)

I have (today) changed my photo period to 9 hours. I think I will see how that goes and move up to 10 hours as you do next week. Still curious about split photo periods and any real world experiences with them. Thanks to all! :thumb:

Photo period. (How long is good?)

After a 20 years absence, I have a new 10 gallon fairly heavily planted tank. While cycling I had the lights on (26 watts CFL, 5800ºK) for 12 hours. Of course, I got an algae bloom. :splat: I learned my ways and reduced my lighting to 8 hours, and I started using Excel Flourish. The algae...

10 Gallon Low Tech Photo Journal

I may have "freaked out" yesterday about the Ich, because no more than an hour later I looked and could not see any spots on any of the fish at all! :Fade-color: (I look carefully at all of them several times a day.) I wonder if somehow a bit of frozen daphnea may have been stick on one side...
