Feeding Harlequin Shrimp - Do They EVER Get Full

This was their first feeding and my big observation at this point is they MUST have a rediculous metabolism. I thought (from reading) that they only ate the tube feet but my pair devoured the entire star (or my crabs did a good cleanup in the harlequin's aftermath). Next time I feed I am going...

Feeding Harlequin Shrimp - Do They EVER Get Full

I completely understood their diet before I bought them....I just didn't expect them to be hungry again immediately. Everyone around Atlanta feeds sand sifting stars or chocolate chip stars...they certainly enjoyed the sand sifter. The last time I saw them on the star it was only a single leg...

Feeding Harlequin Shrimp - Do They EVER Get Full

I have a small pair of Harleys I got to remove all the asterinas from my reef. Took them a couple weeks to devour 1000+ asterinas....amazing. Anyways, once they were out and about looking for food, I gave them a 4-5" sand sifting star. They pounced on, drug it around the tank for about a week...

Lifespan/Cycle of Starfish After Losing Legs

SG 1.026 CA 425 +/- MG 1300-1350 Alk 8-9 pH 8.2-8.4 depending on photocycle My parameters have been rock solid on this tank since it was setup in August 08 (other than an occasional nitrate or phosphate hit) I have SPS's that were 1" nubs 6 months ago that are colonies the size of baseballs...

Lifespan/Cycle of Starfish After Losing Legs

For everyone's info, HN1 and I recently got a big laugh out of an Ebay ad for (4) Asterina Stars for $14.99 and he was selling them like crazy apparently:cool:

Lifespan/Cycle of Starfish After Losing Legs

I recently had such a population explosion of asterina stars in one of my cubes that they completely devoured the coraline in the tank and made my beautiful purple LR look more like base rock:rolleyes: A pair of harlequin shrimp to the rescue. Anyways, once the tank is cleaned out, I will...

I spent the better part of a month fishing 2 Blufin Damsels out of my own tank.....I feel your pain.

Alkalinity Dropping Significantly in 24 hours

It has less fish actually. 1 true perc, a yellow coris wrasse, and an ORA phantom blenny. The corals are larger colonies than my other JBJ's, but my dose is also significantly bigger for this tank. I've been using a little SeaChem buffer in the monrings and then dosing in the evening for the...

Alkalinity Dropping Significantly in 24 hours

I still have to dose CA (and occasionally MG) to maintain those steady so I can't just drop them. There are some really large SPS's (especially for a nano) and a clam in there so CA would disappear quickly if I dropped it probably. I think the 2-part solutions are somewhat ionically balanced...

Alkalinity Dropping Significantly in 24 hours

I do weekly PWC's of 5 gallons (20%+/-) with SeaChem Reef Salt (I've also used H2Ocean Pro+ and like it.....just can't afford it...LOL). It'll get the Alk up to 8-9 but by the next day it'll be down a couple points and the cycle continues for the rest of the week. I mix the salt a little hot...

Alkalinity Dropping Significantly in 24 hours

First of all, I run several smaller cubes between 12 and 50 gallons including 2 JBJ Nanocube 28 HQI's. All of my tanks run identical PWC intervals, dosing schedule (amounts vary obviously), and have similar stock lists. Mostly SPS's and zoas. One of my JBJ 28's however drops 2 full points Alk...

    Sun Coral vs. BTA

Every once and a while when my BTA is fully inflated and the current in my tank hits it just right a stray tentacle or 2 will brush my sun coral. The BTA retracts violently but the sun coral seems unaffected. Anyone have any opinions on whether or not the BTA is actually hurting the sun coral...

Sea Squirt in my Sun Coral?

During the day when the sun coral is retracted I SWEAR I can see a closed clam shell in that hole. I wonder if it is a baby clam of some sort and what I think to be "tubes" is just the mantle expanded. That would be awesome as well:D

Sea Squirt in my Sun Coral?

Recently picked up a large sun coral and when I bought it it appeared to have a little dark spot between a few heads that I assumed was an area of flesh recession and algae growth. However, after acclimation, placement, and feeding, I noticed the dark spot opened up and is 2 beautiful deep red...
