The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

Alrighty I'll give it a try, maybe post back in awhile and update how it went. Let's see what I can and can't grow in this thing (assuming no office sabotage.)

The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

I live in Canada so I'm looking at $50USD + customs + tax at the border + $25 shipping. If it was for my personal tank sure but I don't really want equipment that expensive hanging out at the office. Office coworkers are already complaining about the lack of fish (it's day two, thank god the...

The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

Oy all of these lamps are proving to be so expensive I'm seriously considering just picking up a compact florescent desk lamp to set over it. Might be low wattage... but would likely work no?

The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

Looks like my lighting options are: - 14in 18w 1 BULB COMPACT LIGHTHOUSE HOOD - 14in 27w 1 BULB COMPACT LIGHTHOUSE HOOD - 16in 24W 1 BULB COMPACT LIGHTHOUSE HOOD Is >20W overkill on a 5.5Gal? I have no plans for CO2 on this thing.

The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

Shrimp tank is a thought. Red cherries seem to be really expensive around this area though. I'm quite happy with a betta but we'll have to see, bettas are so interactive with you they're fun to keep imho. I'm pretty on the fence about neons, they seem to be so hard to keep. I've come to love my...

The Office Aquarium - Stock/Lighting Suggestions?

Our office has been talking about getting an "office pet" ie an aquarium. Not wanting to see someone show up with a 1 gallon tank and a gold fish, I've dragged my 5.5gal 16" wide tank out of storage (this tank was supposed to be a tiny planted experiment but the space isn't available at home...

Bought a House - Need to Move My Fish!

We moved my 36G mid winter about -12C outside. We put all the plants and fish into a tall rubbermaid container and used a couple of big water jugs to move about half the water. Drained the tank and tossed at least half the gravel in buckets, loaded it all into a preheated SUV and off we went...

    Cory fry - pics

I'm not sure what exactly it was that triggered mine. I have six peppered cory cats in a 36g and they've been together for a year now. I recently changed my aquarium substrate to something more natural and that involved moving all the fish out to a shallow holding container and a very large...

    Cory fry - pics

My first set, from the posting on the 10th, were not good and quickly showed fuzz. We found more eggs a couple of days later and scooped them into the net. Two out of five went white but three were good and those three hatched sometime during the morning of the 15th. It looked like what was left...

    Cory fry - pics

Thanks! I checked this morning and the eggs are gone! I can see two fry for sure, the third egg is gone as well but I haven't seen three yet. My order with liquid fry food showed up yesterday so I'll give that a try to start them. Just to make sure I've got this right, I should wait a day or...

    Cory fry - pics

I realize this thread is super old but the photos are exactly the same as what I'm looking at right now! I've had cory eggs appear in my tank this week and we picked up a breeder net very similar to yours, I'm hoping I can end up with some cute fry of my own in the next week. Do you mind if I...

    Good brand heater ???

I've been very happy with my stealth. I used to have a glass heater and made the switch to the stealth, I'm not switching back any time soon. It's nice not to have to worry about cracking or breaking the glass when working in the tank. The price is not bad on the stealth if you decide to switch.

    20g Light/CO2 Questions

I am going to do some hunting for rock to create a cave like structure this afternoon & I'll do some asking around about the pool sand if I stop at Petland. I can check local prices on things for comparison if there's something you're looking to check prices on. Having a dog, a cat and fish...

    Trimming Val

Hey all, I have managed to get some lovely thick Vallisneria through a friend of a friend changing his tank set up. It has grown out quite long and is covering the top of my tank a bit too much. I'm hearing there's a right and a wrong way to shorten this stuff up as he found it tended to die...

    20g Light/CO2 Questions

Arical I have seen 20 longs for sale locally and I am quite certain you have a 20 high. If that tank is made by all glass I've found this PDF useful for looking up size information for most standard size tanks -> http://www.aqueonproducts.com/assets/011/19784.pdf Be sure to give me a heads up if...

2 HOB Filters in 38 Gal Aquarium?

We live in a cold environment so my parents house their pond goldfish in a ~35gal and a 20gal tank during the winter months. They have a large pond so the fish are growing quite large (and are very beautiful fish!). She was previously running 2 so-so quality HOB filters on each of the tanks...

    5.5 Gallon Planted Startup

Alrighty I'll aim for a wattage in the 30s and check out DIY CO2. I'll take some photos while setting up and once I've got it going. My cat has been known to sit on top of goldfish tanks and terrorize the fish.. we even caught her sleeping on top of the hood once. Once she's used to the fish...

    5.5 Gallon Planted Startup

I'd like to stick with open top as that seems to work great with our other betta tank. However I'm going to come up with a screen for that tank too, I'm afraid of what will happen when the cat checks out the betta and the betta decides he can take the cat. I'm thinking about trying the CFL...

    5.5 Gallon Planted Startup

Well here we go.. getting myself into trouble again. This is sitting on my living room floor at the moment. Dan and I decided to combine our love for planted tanks and bettas into a new 5.5 gallon project and brought this home this past weekend. I still need to order a heater and find a spot to...

What Kind of Gourami Is This?

I've been doing some research to figure out exactly what kind of gourami's I have, but I keep coming up with conflicting answers. I've found pictures of Honey Gouramis, "Sunset" Dwarf Gourmais, Thick-lipped Gouramis, and Red Robin Gouramis that all look similar to these two of mine. The store...

Online retailers that ship to Canada?

bigalsonline.ca has been good for me, it's cheaper then local prices and I usually get the stuff I order in 4 days or so.

    Heater Recommendations?

Okay, I saw both the Jager and the Visitherm Stealth online and was wondering if they were alright. I don't often do huge water changes so putting the heater lower in the tank would let me just leave it plugged in all the time. Edit: The Jager and the Stealth are almost the same price and they...

    PWC's how often???

I am doing about 15-20% weekly in mine. My tank is planted and not overly stocked, but just doing that bit of work with the tank once a week gives me time to really pay attention to what's happening with my fish and my equipment.. I actually think I'd miss spending an hour or so every weekend...
