I have BN and still have a huge algea problem. I have cut my lights down to 8 hours a day and now do twice a week water changes but it well take time to see results.
No luck with ottos here either they just die so I stopped getting them.

My 75 gallon is 24 tall that is why I don't keep any live plants in it just the goldfish, dojo and BN's.
I tried the plants but even with a stool it was just to much of a pain to work with.
White mountian cloud minnows. 4 or 6. As long as the temp stays stable with no heater they well be ok but if the tanks does not stay stable I would get a heater.
I would do a good cleaning on the tank but leave the media in the filter to seed the tank. Then do water test to make sure it is cycled.
Platies are good too and White cloud mountain minnows are easy to care for. Just don't over stock.
