Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

Thanks Eric. I don't think I'm going to bother with the impeller. My neighbor might be interested in tinkering with it, so I'll probably dump it on him if he wants it. I can't see bothering with it at this point. The Fluval is going strong, and I'd rather put that $20 toward a canister filter...

Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

Nope, it's still unresolved at the moment. I heard about the intake tube thing somewhere, so I really tried jamming the tube in there and still have the noise. I was going to replace the impeller, but they want like $20 shipped for one everywhere I looked. In an effort to save a few bucks, I had...

Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

Just double checked, and it's smooth as far as I can get my hands down the impeller tube. Do impellers go bad? Like are there bearings or something inside them?

Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

I didn't really stick my finger down there... I did stick the toothbrush down there to clean out any crud while I was at it. I'll try cramming my finger in there and see what I can feel. Wish I could pop the motor off like I can on my Aquaclear, but I guess that's not a user-serviceable part on...

Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

I currently have a 20gal tank with a Fluval submersible filter. It does the job well and is more or less silent. My son's tank is a 10gal with a Aquaclear 20, and it's also very quiet except for the waterfall noise. The actual motor is almost silent. I picked up a 29gal tank today for next to...

Would a Betta work in my tank?

Thanks for the advice! I already have 2 tanks.. Thought about a 3rd for a Betta, but I just don't have the time for it right now - it's all I can do to work, run around after the kids, and keep our two tanks up! That's why I was thinking about tossing one in the 20gal. My son's 10gal would be...

Would a Betta work in my tank?

Hi everyone! I have this desire to have a Betta in my tank. Dunno why... I guess they're just cool looking fish! Right now I have the following tank... 20gal tall, fake plants, big tree stump looking thing, and now a couple of clay pot caves instead of the bubbling Colosseum pictured in my sig...

    Noob with light confusion...

Nope, no starter, it's electronic. And no, I don't (nor have I ever) worked in NY. All my working years have been spent here in good old GA :(

    Noob with light confusion...

Thanks for the reply jsoong. I highly doubt I'll go planted with this tank - I have enough on my hands without having to worry about keeping plants alive! I just mentioned it in case there was a light that was good for both in case I lose my sanity and want to tackle live plants. I've heard the...

    Noob with light confusion...

Good morning everyone! I have a 20gal tall FW aquarium that's cycling right now. I got it used, and it came with a 24" All-Glass light hood. I thought the bulb was bad, but it turns out it's the ballast. Takes about a minute to start up most of the time. I was going to pick up a new ballast...

New 20gal - what to stock it with?

Thanks for the advice! I'm on the south side of town, so getting up to the ATL and getting fish is tough, but I guess I have some time to plan a trip up there while I am waiting for the tank to cycle.

New 20gal - what to stock it with?

AFAIK, all I have is the standard chain places around here - Petsmart, Petco, etc :( Wish we had something more legit than that!

New 20gal - what to stock it with?

Thanks for the reply! I like the look of the Corys more than the otos anyhow, so that's good :) I really like the Gouramis - would a single one be okay with a few rams?

New 20gal - what to stock it with?

Yesterday I picked up a used 20gal tank complete with decorations, light, filter, new gravel, etc. Started cleaning last night, hoping to get started cycling tonight. I've been pondering the fish thing... I was considering getting a big a$$ school of neons or something like that, but we have...

Aquariums are difficult to photograph, help me out!

Ditto what MarineFlake said! I've been trying to pry a 100mm Macro from a co-worker to try out... Think I would have even better luck w/ that. I've always wondered how those macro "filters" work - never tried one. Might be a decent alternative to buying more glass, but where's the fun in...

Thanks for the info! The rasbora is a Harlequin.

Want a larger fish in the tank - options?

Thanks! We do pretty religious maintenance on the tank - regular water changes and vacuuming, testing, filter media changes at recommended intervals, etc. The tank is in my son's room, so A) I want him to be able to enjoy the fish without curd floating in the water and funking up the ornaments...

Want a larger fish in the tank - options?

After browsing around here for the last few days, I've got the itch to add another resident to my son's aquarium! Details of the aquarium and its inhabitants are in my sig and also in my profile... Right now there are 8 fish total, all small fish except the bleeding heart tetra. Given the...

Aquariums are difficult to photograph, help me out!

Oh, this is much more than an accessory! Canon | Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens | 2514A002BA I love this lens. You can't beat the performance/cost on it! I put some pics in my gallery in my profile... They were taken with my 50mm a couple nights ago. It's an amazing lens in low light...

Couple of random first time shots

Thanks! Glad they're working! That's not debris in the tank, BTW, that's just funk on the glass... I'm going to steal a macro lens from a coworker and see if I can do even better!

    Strange beasts in my sand

Wow... I'm a noob and don't have a clue what to tell you, but those things sure look neat! Great pic! I'm glad you were able to save your star :) It wasn't traumatized too badly from the near-death experience?
