    dead waving hand coral

I got my first coral about 2-3 weeks ago so I could see if I was doing everything correctly for them to survive. Well they didn't. They lasted about 10 days. In fact they looked like they were doing fine right up until I did a water change. Very soon after adding in the water, they started...

    overflow is loud

I built an overflow for my tank but the drain part is really loud, Like a bathtub draining. Is it because I don't have a spounge around the outside of the intake of the drain, or because the drain tube is too narrow, or perhaps because it is not ribbed?

    DIY auto top off

don't forget that the tip of the tube extends under the water, so you actually have negative air pressure holding up all of the weight. The ping pong ball would only be in there to prevent mixing fresh water with the salt water.

    DIY auto top off

Now that I think about it, I probably don't want a rubber gasket in the water, so I'd probably use something else for that.

    DIY auto top off

Heres what I was thinking for a really cheap auto top off. basically an upside down 2 liter bottle of fresh water, with a ping pong ball to keep the fresh water from mixing with the saltwater. Is there an better really cheap way to do it than this?

Well, I bought 16.5 lbs of LR yesterday. 2 rocks are blocky but have good growth. 1 is larger and oddly shaped and only half of it has growth the rest is barren. Theres some bright forest green growth on one that I really like. Can I help spread that around by scraping some of it off and...

newb with a 29 gal aq.

I live in Champaign, so Valparaiso IN is like 4 hours away, definatly not worth $90 to drive that far. One thing I was wondering that wasn't answered though, is do I need the lighting BEFORE I can get LR?

newb with a 29 gal aq.

Hi, very nice forum, glad I found it. I'm just starting into SW, and aquariums in general. I bought a 29 gal tank with the generic lighting. After finding a different LFS I've decided I definatly want to get some corals but would also like a number of fish also. Currently I have a 1/2in. live...
