    Water queston

That's what I do. I bought a few 5g jugs and fill them up for 39 cents a gal. I have had no problems with the water yet. I rent to so a ro unit is not an option yet. It's pretty cheap to get water from the store but I will get a ro when I get a house. I started going to a water place like...

Water Options - Initial Tank Fill

well I just picked up three 5g water jugs and get them filled for 39 cents/g. It doesn't cost much to buy r/o water. I would like to get a r/o unit in the future but this works ok for now. I wouldn't recommend the hose or city water

    getting used live rock

ok I'll scrub it down then put it in saltwater. What do you think about adding a piece of shrimp to help out the cycle or is that not necessary

    getting used live rock

yeah my tank has been going great for about seven months now. I just wasn't sure what would happen if I put this rock in. I think I'll put it in my water change tub to let it soak for a week or two and add it slowly. Now some are saying to soak it in fresh water first then add the salt a few...

    getting used live rock

I've been reading up on this and I'm seeing I might be ok putting it in my tank since I have LR in it already to start up the dead rock. Do any of you agree with that or should I put it in a plastic container to cure it first? I have around 60 lbs of rock in the tank now.

    getting used live rock

I found someone who has some what was live rock but is now dead because they left it outside for about two weeks now because their tank leaked. They returned everything to the lfs but the rock. Do you think the rock is still ok to put in my tank? I'd like to put more rock in if it'll be ok...

    purple hair algea

thanks for all the help everyone! The air line worked great to clean the rocks. The tank looks so much better now that I was able to get in all the nooks and crannies. Thanks again for the great tips:)

    purple hair algea

well I've been online looking at pics and I was wrong. It is cyano and not the hair algae like I thought it was. Will anything eat that stuff or do I need to just keep working on getting it out. I stopped using the purple up and only feed the fish once a day. I'm thinking I may start feeding...

    purple hair algea

thanks for the site melosu58. I have tried most of those tips already. The only thing I haven't done is shut the lights off. I did cut them back and turned off a new 18,000k sun light. I wasn't sure if that caused the out break or not. I didn't want to turn the lights off completly though...

    purple hair algea

Does anyone know the best way to get rid of the purple hair algea? I've been trying to suck it all out with my water changes but it returns in a few days. I was wondering if there are some fish that will eat it. I have hermits and an urchin but they wont eat it. My emerald crab just gets it all...

I believe that light comes with leds in it. It should also come with legs to keep it up. I leave the lids off for better gas exchange. Your lids will get funky anyway and block light.

I'm glad to hear your really reserching the lights. It's easy to buy cheaper ones to get going but you'll probably end up upgrading later. I seen a web site that I believe was called aquarium lighting chart. It has all the tank measurements and what corals will work with different lights

    sump issues

You may need another overflow. Thats a lot of water for a single. What's your overflow rated for? You also want to make sure you have extra room in your sump for the back flow. I run mine at the surface with a wave maker on it for surface aggitation. It's best to run your tube high or drill a...

I think that should do great for most corals. The lunar lights are cool at night. I think you'd be ok with a 6x54 also. I think the 8x54 is made for deeper tanks but it sure won't hurt to have more light. Just make sure it's not wider than the tank. Your going to want room to feed and adjust things

The lighting can get you all kinds of opinions though. I am trying to stay away from the mh because of the heat they put off. I think if your not getting into the corals the require vary strong lighting I would suggest vho t5s. You can get them with moon lights built in also. I have seen some...
