    Switching to sand

If you put sand on top of gravel, eventually the sand will work its way to the bottom, and the gravel will be on top.

    Switching to sand

Are you going to put the sand on top of the gravel, or remove the gravel and have just sand?

    Fluval Edge AquaScape

Personally, I would put some sort of background on it. I would also put some sort of large decoration in as a centerpiece, or a larger piece of driftwood if you want to keep it natural. And I think the black gravel will look better than the multi-colored you have in it now.

    Starting a 25G Cube Tank

I have a Fluval 206 canister and an Aquaclear 50 on my 16 gallon. The AC50 will be moved to my new 46 gallon when I start cycling it. I really like the Fluval 06 series. They're quiet, easy to maintain, have adjustable flow, and lots of room for media. I ordered a 306 for my 46g. Aquaclears are...

    Doctors Foster and Smith?

I've been buying from them for years. Never had a problem. And they have great prices to boot. Highly recommended.

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

You know, I was just thinking. Have you tried removing the strainer at the end of the intake to see if that improves the flow? The strainer has a ball in it that, according to Hagen, prevents the water from siphoning out of the intake in case of a power outage.

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

That definitely does not look like 300gph. Or even 150. Very perplexing. I'll be very curious to see how mine does.

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

According to everything I've read, the 306 is rated at 303gph.

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

I've heard that before about Fluvals losing flow with time. Have you contacted them? I have a 206 on a smaller aquarium. I haven't noticed the flow lessening, but it's only been a month or so. Anyway, I ordered the 306 from PetSmart today. I couldn't pass up the price. It was $108 after the sale...

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

I've seen a lot of people on the forums use bio-balls and scrubbies in canisters. So you'd recommend two trays of Matrix or Biomax (or some such)?

Opinions? Fluval 306 vs. SunSun HW-402B

I would like your opinions. If you had to choose between a Fluval 306 or SunSun HW-402B for a 46 gallon bowfront, which would you prefer? The Fluval is rated at 303gph and has three media baskets, in addition to the large foam frame. The SunSun is rated at 264gph, also has three media baskets...

    Type of sand for substrate?

Here are a couple photos of the sand in the 16.

    Type of sand for substrate?

I'm setting up a new 46 gallon glass bowfront, and want to use sand as the substrate. In the past, I've used swimming pool filter sand. But I have that in my 16 gallon, and the top layer is turning dark brown. Are there better sands out there? PetSmart sells National Geographic brand sand, but...

    SunSun canister filter media recommendations

Oh sorry, it's for a 46 gallon glass bowfront. It will be freshwater. I've never used Matrix or Substrat Pro. Should I fill the middle tray with it? I've also never used Purigen. Likewise, should I fill the top tray with it? I'm thinking a coarse sponge and two fine sponges in the bottom tray.

    SunSun canister filter media recommendations

I just received the SunSun HW-402B canister filter I ordered, and I was surprised to find it only came with four white filter pads. I'm assuming they're fine. I figure I need some bio media, and maybe a coarse pad or two. There are four trays. What should I use, and what should I put in which...

    Acrylic bowfront

I used to have a glass 46 gallon bowfront. I decided on an acrylic this time, because all the glass ones I've seen have black seams in the corners. The acrylic looks a lot cleaner to me.

    Acrylic bowfront

I've decided to order an acrylic bowfront, either a 36 or 46 gallon. I read on a forum somewhere, but can't remember where now, that someone said he put foam under the aquarium when he set it up. What kind of foam, and what is the purpose?

    Nitrites too high

Today's test results. Looks like between 0 and 5ppm of nitrates.

    Nitrites too high

Okay, I'm going to call this zero. This is without a water change. I'll keep checking it everyday, though.

    Nitrites too high

The only "chemicals" I've been using is Stability, which is a beneficial bacteria supplement, I thought. Unless you consider Nitra-Zorb a chemical. Should I remove the Nitra-Zorb?

    Nitrites too high

Well, the level hasn't been this low since I started testing a few weeks ago. I did get some Prime, I'll see if that helps. I'll also do smaller, more frequent water changes. Thank you everyone for the replies!

    Nitrites too high

I have a 16 gallon freshwater aquarium that I set up on June 6. I'm currently running an AC50 HOB filter, and a Fluval 206 canister filter on it. I have Nitra-Zorb in both filters. I put the coarse foam from an Eheim Liberty 200 HOB filter in the Fluval to help seed it. The Fluval has been...

    quiet(er) filter for a 30g?

I have an Aquaclear 50 on a 16 gallon tank, and it's nearly silent with the lid off the filter. Put the lid on, and it's louder. So I leave the lid off. But like others have said, I have a Fluval 206 canister that is absolutely silent.
