    Stocking a 75G

I have a peppermint, coral banded, and cleaner skunk shrimp. The coral and cleaner are out all the time and get along fine. The peppermint hides a lot, so maybe the coral just hasn't found it yet. I've had the coral for 2 years, the cleaner for a year and the peppermint for a month.

    Stocking a 75G

I have a bi-color blenny that is fun to watch. He rests on rocks or hides in the coral, watching the other fish go by, then darts out to grab a bite off the rocks. They're algae eaters, and mine eats mysis or anything else I feed the others. He sort of looks like an eel when he swims. I think...

    My anemone had a baby!

Mom and split baby are doing fine! Thank you! The split BTA hid under a rock each night, and came out during the day. Today he was already out, so I guess he's mended. He's positioned right next to his split-mate and is almost as big. My maroon clown is ecstatic since now he can stretch...

    My anemone had a baby!

WOW! That tank is unbelievable! I hope it wasn't stress. I've had him for about 8 months. It was bleached white with stringy tentacles. He now is a natural greenish tan color with thick bubbles, eats well, and hasn't moved from where he originally was. And now there are TWO!

    My anemone had a baby!

Yesterday, my bubble tip anemone was all stretched out on the rocks with his mouth a long thin line. I'd never seen him that way before, so this morning, first thing, I checked on him. He looked fine, no more stretching, mouth back to normal. Then I noticed bubble tips peeking out from the...

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

I'm wondering the same thing, Vicki! I also have an anemone. I did cut back to 8 hours a day for the last 2 weeks, but don't see much difference. Hopefully, someone will let us know how long coral can be without light before they're affected.

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

Thanks, I think I've tried everything, so I guess I'll wait for the new protein skimmer to kick in to see if that works. Meawhile, I spend at least half an hour a day plucking out algae. A lot collects on the pump sponge, and I have to clean it off once or twice, so maybe it is dying off??? I...

    foxface nips at sponge

Hi, I just added a yellow fan sponge and red ridge sponge to my aquarium about a week ago. My foxface leaves the yellow alone but constantly nips at the red. White tips are starting to show up where the nips occur. Will this kill the sponge? I've moved it to a net container until I find out...

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

Urchin Protein Skimmer added Hello, Vicki! I finally broke down and got a protein skimmer after 15 months. I was trying to just do live rock, sand, mangroves, lots of clean-up creatures, but my mangroves never developed well. I had no problems for the first year, then started noticing a...

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

Is is always nitrates and phosphates that cause nuisance algae growth? In a nutshell this link Using Mangroves For Nitrate Reduction In A Saltwater Aquarium explains what I'm trying to do, but I may not have mangroves that are developed enough to do the job. I didn't want to buy an expensive...

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

A very good link, thank you. I've already implemented most of them. I'm worried about reducing the light since I have a lot of coral - mostly polyps, a mushroom, and a leather - and the anemone. Will major light reduction hurt these? Also, I had never heard about coral additives and filter...

Pleased to meet cha, I have hair algae!

30 years teaching middle school probably gave me the patience to maintain a saltwater aquarium, but I've done TONS of reading, research, etc. (which is how I found this site), and still feel like I've only scratched the surface!!!!! I need help. My son brought his 29 gallon saltwater aquarium...
