What to put in a 1g?

A betta would do ok in a 1g.

    Sunfish

Legalities and disease aside, you may run the risk of subjecting your koi to some fin-nipping. Sunfish have a lot in common with cichlids... don't remember for sure, but I think they occupy the same genus. I donated a sunfish (that was captive bred in a goldfish farm) to a nearby university...

getting oil out of 5 gallon containers?

Assuming that the peanut oil is not congealed in the bucket(s), you could remove the top rack from your dishwasher, and wash them two at a time. I washed a couple of new buckets this way so I could make spodies in them several years back. They should just fit in the dw. Oil is tricky to get...

    clown loach

I would get 3 more tiger barbs and a clown loach, the clown will feel comfortable around the school of barbs, much like it's with its own kind.

    Ph 8.8+

Don't use distilled water, unless you are mixing, because it lacks essential ions (electrolytes), and will kill fish, amphibians, and probably turtles, even if pH, nitrates nitrites ammonia are all ok.

    overstocking question?!!!

a pike is a gar... equivalent to freshwater barracuda, destined to eventually attack EVERYTHING you might as well have an alligator in there

    wee little cracked tank

The glass will absolutely fit through the top lip. (The only shape that won't fit through a hole of slightly smaller size is a circle.) Realistically, you do want to get that other piece of glass out of there, but being it is a small tank, you also don't want to break the relatively flimsy...

    wee little cracked tank

Have a glass shop cut another piece of glass for it. If you can't get that one out, take a razor knife and remove the silicone from around the perimeter on the bottom, lay the new piece of glass right on top of the old, silicone in place, and voila! It's on the bottom, you won't see it anyway...

    What Are Your Fish Named?

I had 3 pond Koi that I named Whiskey, Tango and Foxtrot.

    Ph?

I have Blue Rams too... but my tap water fluctuates from acidic to basic every couple months. Last month it was right at 6.0, and it is currently between 7.1 and 7.2, and unfortunately it is pretty well buffered, so it doesn't adjust well, but my rams are happy, so I don't mess with it.

    Ph?

Fish will do better at a stable high pH than at a constantly fluctuating pH. Unfortunately even tap water pH fluctuates fairly often.

    Mystery Fry

They could definitely be tetras, the anal fin gene has yet to be expressed.

    Mystery Fry

It takes weeks for fry to come to resemble their parents, as in early development, all vertebrates go through the same processes, granted the points where different genes "turn on," causing differentiation happen at different times. Wait a couple of weeks, and you'll know which fish was the...

    African Dwarf Frog w/my 55

There is definitely a point of diminishing return for preventing incidental exposure to pathogens. I'd say it's a given that most all of us are cautious of our behavior around our tanks (washing whenever coming into contact with the environment). The reality is fish can also harbor Salmonella...

    Tiger Barb courting or fighting?

"everything was gasping at the top" My barbs all assume a downwards-facing position near the surface when sleeping, is this what they were doing? You have to get up pretty early in the AM to see them doing this, though, maybe 2-4 AM. They'll be all over the place, on top of my powerhead...

    Tiger Barb courting or fighting?

Hey Raymond, When mine have done that, it's been 2 females, but not necessarily even the alpha and a potential "challenger", and it hasn't necessarily been associated with breeding condition (big gravid tummies). Regular females are less colorful than the males, having a brown face, and less...

    African Dwarf Frog w/my 55

... Something I didn't address before, was too focused on Salmonella. Frogs acquire a fair amount of oxygen right through their skin. Can they stay underwater indefinitely? -no, but depending on their activity level, they are able to stay under such a long time that the depth of any reasonable...

    African Dwarf Frog w/my 55

As for the Salmonella risk, a lot of things we encounter in our everyday lives are potential carriers for pathogens. As long as you are not planning on eating a dwarf frog raw, you shouldn't be at any real risk of innoculating yourself with a member of the genus Samonella. People who become...

    moving w/ fish

I'm also looking potentially moving soon. Possibly trading the west coast for east in the next year, and have been contemplating the move. I think the majority of my fish are going into a 5-Gal water bottle (like from a office water dispenser, i.e. Culligan's, etc.) My thought process is it...

How do you care for your fish on the way home from the store..

:eating: seriously?! It's funny that this topic even warrants a thread, let alone a poll. The thread was just asking to get fun poked at it in my book! Anyone who would carry a fish home from the pet store in their mouth via their own intuition, or another's advice should be subject to...

    Help with Identification Please.

The reason I strayed from saying it was a pumpkinseed is; the university I attend has several pumpkinseeds on display in a tank, and the spots on its side are not monocolored, they vary from near red to orange to blue to green all on the same fish. I'm no ichthyologist, I just know the fish I...

How do you care for your fish on the way home from the store..

I hold them in my mouth. The salivary amylase is excellent for their slime coat!

    Help with Identification Please.

Bass? It looks like it could be a green sunfish to me. Pumpkinseeds look very similar, but are a darker/less green color variant. Same-same, if you ask me. It will be easier to identify when it gets older, assuming you keep it that long. I was actually given a couple also, however mine were...
