Project "no salt needed" build thread

Ok well here are the pics, the tote is for leak protection only.

Project "no salt needed" build thread

Well, I would post he pics of my filter setup but the manage attach button won't work. Go figure. Anyway, the other bags of eco showed up today, giving me 120 pounds total, will that be enough for the bottom? If not, I'll get a couple bags of dirt and stretch it out. RC, thanks for the...

Project "no salt needed" build thread

RC, don't you just love hearing your power meter do a burnout when the halides kick on? I did check the ph of the same water today at the lfs, 7.1, the lady said my kit is bad because she draws from the same municipality as me, full refund and the new kit showed 7.1 as well, kh is 7, gh...

Project "no salt needed" build thread

No water softener. Is 6.2 really that bad? I'm sure nature has a little swing every now and then. Couldn't I just remove the sand if the hardness and ph go up too high while it's cycling? It will be in a central location, not mixed in with the eco. Please don't think I'm being an ***, I'm just...

Project "no salt needed" build thread

Speaking of RO water, do I need to use the di section of it as well or just the RO section? The tds is about 3-7 out of the RO unit, the di unit takes it to 0. Anywho, as far as fish, I don't want a stockyard full in the tank, my reef was pitifully under stocked only had 6 fish in there, only 2...

Project "no salt needed" build thread

I'm starting my build thread now and documenting the growth of my 125g planted tank. I gave the thread the name "no salt needed" because I'm coming from a reef tank. I got the tank cleaned up and placed back in my den. In the pic is how my filtration will be setup, the black box in the bottom...

    Coming from reef aquarium

Reading around was a waste, just a bunch of useless arguing that answered nothing. For what I need to do, I guess I'll just break down and buy the aga stuff. RC, thank you for the help as well as the others.

Yes, but it's high for that small tube. I used GE-1 on my sump for the reef, but I can't find it anymore around here. Never had any trouble from it. I was just wondering if there was another brand, or is just any 100% pure silicone ok? It can't have any inhibitors obviously.

    Coming from reef aquarium

Didn't get started yet, I broke down and ordered the rest of the eco, couldn't stand it. I'm going to silicone the drawbox to the bottom back corner of the rank and use it for my inlet strainer. What silicone should I use, used to be ge1, but I can't find that anywhere anymore.

    Coming from reef aquarium

I would order if I didn't need to burn the store credit, one store is good for fish, I went to the one good for supplies. It's a 900gph box so it's roughly the same size as a 400. I'll get to work on plumbing in the morning, and I'll start my build thread. However, I think I may try an...

    Coming from reef aquarium

Well throw the emperor out the window, it's in the dump somewhere. I got the 125 plus the 29 sump cleaned out finally, yuck. I have a bunch of credit with a lfs and they had only one bag of eco, Said it would be 2-3 weeks, I'll wait because I have about 2 months before that credit...

    Coming from reef aquarium

I used a sump vs wet/dry on mine, not that it's relevant. In the reef setting, all that left over stuff is coral food(what the skimmer doesn't catch anyway) or it's food for the ats(turf scrubber) I just lightly vaccumed the sand off and went on with it. PWC's were every 2 weeks at 30g a pop...

    Coming from reef aquarium

Not being a jerk, just asking, but why not let the tank be the filter? Is it due to the lesser amount of surface area for bacteria to grow vs live rock in a sw tank? I'm used to hearing filters are nothing more than nitrate farms, please bear with me. There is going to be some driftwood and...

    Coming from reef aquarium

I think I'll listen and just use the Eco-complete, not the cheapest, but at least the fish for this aren't either. It's funny seeing some folks pass out over a $50 fish. I was thinking just have the mag 7 pump pull from one end of the tank and discharge on the other side. No filter at all, just...

    Chlorine in a planted tank

If plants act like gha and turf algae in saltwater, then the answer would be no. In the algae turf scrubber community, there is talk of not using ro/di water at all, just turn on the tap and go. Personally, I would lean towards yes, it is harmful. The big one to worry about is chloramine, more...

    Coming from reef aquarium

On the substrate, will any organic potting soil work, no pesticide, stuff like that obviously? Or could I just get the Eco-complete and solely use that, (I made out very well from my reef) so the money is there. I read about the unholy nitrates that leach out from soil and take forever to get...

    Coming from reef aquarium

Well duh, now that I think of it, 8-8.2 buffering is why reefers use arag in the first place. That sounds expensive on the Eco, but with a bed of mg under it, shouldn't be so bad. 4 rams would be just fine by me, what about apistos though? Same rules, no mixing?

    Coming from reef aquarium

After a night of reading, I think I'll pass on the discus, running the tank that warm, plus limited tank mates, just not for me. Of course, I heard the same stuff about dragonettes as well, that worked out fine for me. Rivercats, thanks for the links, very in depth and helpful. I was thinking...

    Coming from reef aquarium

mostly plants that feed from the water column, then a couple that feed from the substrate(swords and such) I'd really like a good mix of colors, green as the main color, then some red, blue, etc... to break it up. I was asking if just using one of the pumps would be fine. Have the intake on...

    Coming from reef aquarium

Well that's good about the discus. A reef isn't all that hard, just stay away from acropora corals, too finicky. All that dosing is a money racket, there are several in my area that just do pwcs and all is fine. I do have a triton 1300gph and quiet one 1000gph pump, instead of the ac's, could I...

    Coming from reef aquarium

I just don't want to fool with it, I want as simple as possible. Plus, I'm a fan of natural looking tanks, my reef had little patches of hair algae, and cyano. Never got out of hand, looked natural to me. I wouldn't mind maybe 1-3 discus. I'm guessing if I can keep a mandarin and sea moth alive...

    Coming from reef aquarium

I'm tearing down my reef setup and going to do a planted tank. My tank has gotten to the point it takes care of itself, besides water changes obviously, but we had a power outage and my check valve stuck, plus my siphon break became clogged with something during the day and flooded the den...

    My sea hare croaked.

I had a terrible fear of that when I saw the pale white blob on the sand, my cleaner shrimp and tiger cowrie were chowing down when I walked in. i had read about the pitfalls of owning one before I purchased him, I spend more time reading about this stuff than I do looking at the tank itself...

    My sea hare croaked.

After 10 months of service, my sea hare finally passed on. I will miss the little guy. He was plain looking, but was so cool and wasn't really a picky eater to boot. So, now I am on the hunt for a new hare. Are there any suggestions besides stay away from them? I am mainly looking for size...

    Wanting a little hair algae?

Shutting the scrubber off will make a heck of alot of trouble. what I'm asking, was/is there anyone who has tried this. Not much if any info on it out there. Running a scrubber is a balancing act between the screen and the dt. I was thinking of underpowering it slightly and trying to walk the...
