We keep a small bucket empty and a sponge filter in the aquarium. When we need a QT we dump some tank water into the bucket and move the sponge filter over. If needed the sponge can be ditched.

Also don't have to worrie about weak fish getting stuck to the filter intake.

This is the perfect situation for a sponge filter. I leave one in the main tank and when the hospital tank is needed I drain tank water into it and move the sponge filter over. I can chuck the sponge or disinfect it with the tank if needed easier than a full filter.
