Do I really need a chiller with a FOWLR?

Cool, thanks. Anyone strongly disagree? I pulled the plug on the chiller and the temp dropped to 74 overnight. Lights on today and so far it's just under 75. Makes me think my guess was right in that the toasted chiller may have been causing the heat. (I think that may have been a pun) My ph...

Do I really need a chiller with a FOWLR?

Ok, well, a little background then... When we moved here 4 years ago, we setup a reef tank. Using MH lights, we of course needed a chiller. Wife and I getting older, changing life styles, we sold all the reef critters and went with the current FOWLR. No more MH lights, but still T5's, actinic...

Do I really need a chiller with a FOWLR?

Do I really need a chiller with a FOWLR? How warm is safe? We used to live in Michigan, never even heard of a chiller until we moved here to California. Thing is though, we keep the house the same temp as we did in Michigan. Stays at 75 in the summer and 70 in the winter. Thanks!

    Best way to clean sand

Yeah, Like I say, I have a cleaner pack... Tons of snails, crabs, sand sifters. But they really don't keep up. I need a way to clean the sand well from time to time. And the snails that fall and can't right themselves are eaten by the crabs if they fall in the back where I can't see them...

    Best way to clean sand

The bed of my tank is white "sand". The kind you get that's supposed to be pre-loaded with bacteria. Regardless of the type, it's very fine like sand is;) What's the best way to clean down into the sand to remove access dutritus...etc. Without losing sand each time. I can't think of a time...

    Is live rock a must?

They're sick alright... Even at a snails pace, they become rock star groupies. Someone told me to rock them to sleep, but they were so stoned, every single cell became porous. Bit of a rocky start, but I think I have them corralled. Salty little farts are heavy when they retain water. When...

    Is live rock a must?

Can someone point me to an article on curing? Here's what I don't get... Mass vs. surface area. My LFS wants to sell big heavy hunks of rock. If they had their way I’d buy 3 - 40 lb rocks. Seems to me that if I find 20 pieces that are spindly, lots of branches and porous with FAR more surface...

    Is live rock a must?

Worth the price in that it looks good? I've seen mushrooms come back after supposedly being cured. Funny you should mention Ca. having lots of fish stores. Nearest live lobster is a 50 minute drive. Just found that out yesterday. Brian

    Is live rock a must?

Salt water fish only. Is the live rock a must? My local vender won't let ME choose the chunks, and they always bring out the heaviest most dense they can find!

    Stalking starfish

I have a serpent starfish. I've been given to understand that they should never be exposed to air. The other days I was performing maint. and pretty focused on one end of the tank. I stapped back, and noticed the starfish 10 feet away from the aquarium on the floor and still moving. Took a...

    IS it ick?

Regarding a quarantine tank… If, as the article says, one should tear down the tanks after using it, when setting it back up and introducing a critter, won’t the ammonia and so forth develop stressing the critter? Does one do a partial water change once a week or something? What if one WERE to...

    IS it ick?

I have a tank I can use for treatment and I like the hyposalinity option. However, the articles do not say if the move to lower salinity should be gradual and/or how gradual. Ideas? Thank you VERY much!

    IS it ick?

Please see photo... It does not shoe the extent. 1. I’ve had the fish for about 3 months. I don’t know if it was tank raised or not. I bought it from the local fish store and they said they don’t know either. 2. Its tank mates are a dwarf lion, an eibli angelfish and a Clown trigger the...

    Is my lion fish ashamed?

There is that. My thinking is that if he gets used to live food coming from my finger tips, I might sucker him into taking something else. If you don't hear from me in the next 2 weeks assume it was a bad idea.

    Is my lion fish ashamed?

So far I'm still gut loading the guppy's and gold fish, but I think next time I'm going to try to hand feed it a gold fish and if he takes it I'll try a silverside. Yesterday I had my hand in the aquarium near the top and he was following it just inches away. Obviously he knows who the...

I don't have sand, it's crushed coral. Don't those guys need sand? I was thinking along the lines of a serpent sea star.

    What kind of starfish?

I want to add a starfish to a tank with a clown trigger and a lion fish. I want one that will aggressively eat left over silversides...etc. Advice? Anything else I can add to help keep the bottom clean?
