Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

Two out of the remaining 3 fry look to be dying, and the one remaining guppy (pregnant) is hovering at the top and not moving around much. Not sure if she's ready to drop fry, or drop dead :(

Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

Okay, well now it seems like there may have been bigger problems... This morning I found one of the two guppies dead, the four out of the 7 guppy fry were also dead. None of them showed any previous signs of problems. I tested my water again with a liquid test kit, and I'm at zero for...

Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

Oops, I meant to say Petland Discounts (I guess it's not the same thing). It's a regional chain in the tri-state area (CT, NY, NJ). Lots of stores though, maybe almost 100, mostly in NY. In case that matters. I plan on trying the drip acclimation method with my bucket next time I feel daring...

Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

I got him from a small-ish store "Petland". I think it's a regional chain (U.S. northeast maybe). Hmm, I don't have a secondary tank. I have a 5g bucket i use for water changes. Maybe I can try that next time (once I work up the stones to buy another shark since now I'll always be afraid...

Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

Hmmm, didn't bother the other fish from the same store. The first shark i just dumped him in. The second one i dangled the plastic bag he was in into the tank for awhile, which is probably somewhat pointless. What would be the best way to go about it? Would this still explain it if he looked...

Can't keep red tailed black sharks alive

I first set up my 25 gallon aquarium in December, and have had several problems. I originally ignorantly stocked it too quickly, and ended up with ammonia issues which were likely responsible for a few fish deaths. I added a red tailed black shark before the tank was properly cycled, and he...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

I'm using API stress coat conditioner, the recommended amount, for each change. Yeah, as I said, I stocked too much too fast, because I didn't do my homework, and the pet store(s) proved absolutely worthless as far as advice. The betta bowl is unfiltered, not sure how healthy it is, but my...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

I got a liquid test kit today. Results were as follows: pH: 6.6 (better than the strips were telling me) Ammonia: .25 NO2: 0 NO3: 0 tap water ammonia: 0 (strips were wrong) Recent water changes: Monday: NONE Tuesday: 80% Wednesday: 60% Thursday: 60% Friday: NONE Saturday: ...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

These fish are such big wimps, heh. I have a betta in a 1 gallon bowl, no heat, no filter. I've gone two months between water changes at times (not typically) because i'm a lazy sack of garbage every now and then. I've had him for four years, and he's as frisky as ever. But these guppies...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

Even though I may presumably be introducing NH4 into the water every time I do a PWC? Hoping my pregnant guppy isn't dead when i get home later...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

Alright, how will I know my tank is fully cycled? Will I see nitrates go up a bit? Right now they MAYBE register slightly higher than zero, but hard to tell with the test strip. Nitrite is zero. Will I ever be able to get ammonia all the way to zero having ammonia (at .25ppm) in my tap...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

As I mentioned in another thread, lost my red tail black shark last night after I came home to find him sucked up against filter intake. Died an hour and a half later. Now the aforementioned lazy guppy is just laying there breathing; didn't even raise up from gravel when I turned the light...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

Alright well, he didn't "perk up" after the water change. He was never perked down before that. This was entirely sudden. Either way, yes, trying to get ammonia down to zero. Did another 50% change today and it's now around .25. Will do another tomorrow, but not sure how much it will help...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

Okay, now he's dead. :( To make sure I vanquish ammonia, doing a 50% water change right now.

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

I'm not so sure he got sick at all; he was 100% normal when i left for work not even 12 hours ago this morning... I think the freak accident of getting stuck to the filter has to be the culprit. I know he should have been strong enough to avoid that, but he looked 100% FINE this morning...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

My tank has been high in ammonia lately, i did a big water change yesterday to get it down below .5ppm. This morning when I left for work the shark was acting entirely normal. Hiding in his greek ruins ornament, patrolling the tank, then resuming his post. One thing is that he sometimes likes to...

Emergency: Red tail black shark critically injured

I came home from work today to find my red tail black shark sucked up against the filter in my tank. It is an aqueon filter, the type that has a cylindrical protrusion down into the water to suck in the water/debris/etc. He was sucked up against it and wrapped around it upside down. Turning it...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

Pregnant female especially lazy this morning... laying on the bottom when i turned the light on. All other fish were swimming around. After I turned the light on she raised up and hovered .25 inch from the gravel. She is not yet doing any of the cockeyed swimming that the one that died was...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

I'm in southwest CT; several stores within a 10 mile radius that I know of... don't recall ever having seen crushed coral in the stores, but was never looking. I'll check it out when I go to get liquid test kit. If guppies hate the low pH, I'm surpised the now-deceased female even bothered to...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

Just did about an 80% water change. Everybody looks happy (including the dark lazy guppy; she's swimming around playing with the other guppies). Now ammonia is down from maybe a little over 1ppm to around .5ppm. I'll do another water change tomorrow, maybe 50% (though it's a pain to keep netting...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

rock.jpg is the rock. It may very well be this tufa stuff. Know anything about it? The brown spots are the brown algae I mentioned earlier. guppy.jpg is my attempt at getting a picture of the 'mold' on my guppies. It is a lousy picture, and I couldn't get the camera to focus properly. All you...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

I can probably get a picture in here later. Honestly it may not be rock at all. It may be some sort of coral. I am an extreme noob, as I mentioned. When held dry, it feels almost spiny, and little pieces like grains of sand flake off...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

That would be interesting since we got it from Petco, and it was on a shelf with many other similar rocks, in the freshwater fish ornament/decoration section... But in either case, I'm desperate to help the poor fish so I'm definitely going to remove it for the time being to see if it makes any...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

Yeah, as I mentioned later it actually isn't limestone. Not quite sure WHAT it is. I'd rather avoid buying another tank for the younglings. In any case it's not happening any time soon. Well, anyway, my plan of attack is to do a 75% (or more) water change tonight. Then I'll get another...

Dead and sick guppies, need help!!!!

Okay, sorry for the confusion, the rock actually is not limestone. I actually don't know what it is for sure. It was bought by my wife because it 'looked cool' :) It is something more jagged and sort of crumbly. Either way maybe I'll try removing it to see what happens. I will pick up a...
