What killed my red cherry shrimp???

Yes, the betta and nerite are still alive, but the nerite is hanging out near the surface more than usual.

What killed my red cherry shrimp???

Update: I'm thinking that the surface slime may have suffocated them. The betta can't tolerate much current, so I guess I'm getting an air pump and stone. Think that'll fix it?

What killed my red cherry shrimp???

I have a 5gal fluval spec aquarium with a betta, a nerite snail, and until this afternoon, about 20 red cherry shrimp. I bought the shrimp 2 days ago, and as of this morning, they seemed fine. When I got home from work today, the shrimp were all dead. ALL OF THEM. I quickly tested...

    High pH During Cycling

I tested the pH of my tap water after letting a bowl sit out over night, and it turns out to be 8.0. I guess there's my problem. Not much that I can do about that, is there? Stupid well/spring water. I'm glad to know that the plants will probably withstand it just fine, but I'm concerned...

    High pH During Cycling

I am in the middle of cycling a new 6 gallon aquarium. I checked the pH, and it is 8.2. I'm worried that this is a) going to be bad for my beneficial bacteria, and b) going to be bad for the plants which will be arriving in the mail today. The pH of my tap water is 7.6. The other water...

    Tank isn't cycling...

I totally did a 99% water change today in preparation to switch to fish-in cycling, and then I drove around to SIX different fish stores and didn't see any bettas I liked. :( So I'm back to fishless/liquid ammonia cycling for at least another week. I'm thinking I'll have to order a fish if I...

    Tank isn't cycling...

No, I don't have any mature media. That's why I was thinking of trying the biozyme or something. I don't want to import ich from the local fish store or anything... that's why I hesitate on that one. As per doing fish-in, I've been sorely tempted, but I would go ahead with the betta if I'm...

    Tank isn't cycling...

well, it's a 3 gal tank that holds about 2.5 gal with the decorations in. A little goes a long way...

    Tank isn't cycling...

The advice I got on another thread was to raise the ammonia to closer to 5 ppm, then cut back a bit when nitrites start showing up, so I just added a few drops of ammonia and I'm waiting for them to mix in before I test again. I am shaking the heck out of that second nitrate bottle - the full...

I keep the tank at about 84F.

    Tank isn't cycling...

I'm using the API liquid test kit. What's strange is that I was getting positive readings on the nitrites and nitrates a few weeks ago, but now they're both zero. I haven't done any water changes or anything, either. :/

    Tank isn't cycling...

My little tank is torturing me with its strangeness. I set it up nearly a month ago, on December 28th, and I began officially trying to cycle it about a week later (I had some botched attempts that caused me to start over). I got my ammonia up to about 2ppm with pure ammonia, and for a while I...
