Looking for a good LFS in Long Island

Fishtown USA is probably the best overall for quality, service, selection, and price. Visit on weekdays - the place is insane on weekends and finding parking can be challenging too. I really like Aquarium Adventure too. I agree with goisles1 that they are overpriced, but sometimes they have...

Woe is me - traded in fav fish :(

The fish is going to be much happier in a roomier tank. The guy who adopted him is thrilled that he got such a beautiful healthy fish for free. You just racked up some serious good karma points!

    Placastamus cemetery

Plecos can be difficult to acclimate to a new tank, but once they do, they are extremely hardy. They don't tolerate big swings in temperature, pH, hardness, or nitrates. If your tank water significantly differs from your lps tank water in these regards, you may simply have to spend more time...

    "odd" snail behaviour?

Sounds like normal snail behavior. Mystery snails often go to the surface, extend their siphon, and pump air into their shells. They have lungs in addition to gills! With their shells full of air, they float around while they extract O2. Then, they squeeze out some air and begin to sink -...

Nitrite Spike after 2 months of stable tank

Mulm is the very fine particulate stuff that remains in the gravel even after a good gravel vac. It's mostly decomposing food, fish poop, and plant matter. It's a natural fertilizer for live plants. I forgot to mention that green strainer that's attached to the intake. Mine often gets...

    Do stands collasp?

DEFINITELY buy or build a proper stand for a tank that size! Check Craigslist and local tag sales for cheap used stands. As mentioned, you can build one yourself with 2 X 4 lumber and plywood. Furniture, no matter how massive, is not designed to support such great weight. The problem is not...

Question on my new BN placos

If you feed cucumber or zucchini, remove the seeds - the fish don't eat them and they just make a mess. I like to hollow out the seeds from half of a small zuchinni and weigh it down. The BN plecs love going inside the zucchini tunnel to feed. By morning, all that is left is the skin! I've...

Nitrite Spike after 2 months of stable tank

A few ????? How often do you vac the gravel? What model Eheim do you have? When did you last rinse the filter, and did you try cleaning the impeller? I'm questioning the gravel because your nitrates have been creeping up. Often, this is due to excess decomposing muck trapped in the gravel...

    floating snails

Firstly, have you checked your water parameters? Snails are especially sensitive to ammonia. Also, please post the pH of your tank water and tap water. I have naturally soft water and have always had problems keeping snails alive. The pH in my planted tanks containing driftwood drops to...

Adding angel(s) to existing angel tank?

    New Angel

Try moving the tank decor around - heater, rocks, plants, driftwood, etc. This sometimes forces territorial fish to reestablish a territory on more equal terms with a newcomer. Sometimes it doesn't work, so keep your 38 gal backup plan ready.

    QT Tank Questions

This is exactly what I do and it seems to work well. I use a Penguin mini on my QT tank, and I always slip a Penguin filter cartridge inside my cannister filter to keep it cycled. I also keep the biowheel stashed away behind some plants in my show tank.

    Fish Store advice... UGH

BioSpira is an excellent product - I used it when I started my first aquarium in 2003. It contains live bacteria suspended in buffered water. The IMPORTANT thing about BioSpira is that it must be kept refrigerated in the store AND it has an expiration date. You can add the tank's full...

Cheap alternatives to adding structure to tanks?

Landscaping supply and garden centers are a good source of cheap aquarium rocks including granite, slate, and sandstone. Just be sure to wash thoroughly to remove dirt and contaminants.
