    using root tabs

Thanks - I'll put them around my swords and crypts. I don't have CO2 or strong light, so should be fine that way.

    using root tabs

I bought some Seachem Flourish Tabs for my plants. I want to make sure I use them correctly. The box says to place them every six inches. I have a couple Amazon Swords, Moneywort, a few crypts, some anubias - should I just place them between the plants under the sand so that multiple plants will...

    New to planted tanks.

Gotcha... thanks for clarifying. I'll have to look at our HD this weekend and see what they have.

    New to planted tanks.

Can you buy these locally or do you generally get them online? If so, where is the best place?

    New to planted tanks.

Thanks!! Did you have to alter your hoods at all to use the lights from Home Depot? My lights are 15 watts - I'm not comfortable enough with electricity to do too much changing. ;)

    New to planted tanks.

Thanks - good to know. I really like the little crypt. It came in a container and was a bit rootbound (it was the only one they had, but looked great), so I split it into three parts and spread it out. The Anubias is actually behind the middle piece of driftwood - the one on the right is...

    New to planted tanks.

Thanks!! I am so used to my "outside" plants that come with tags that tell me how big the plant will be. I am afraid that my tank will need some re-arranging as the plants grow and spread. LOL.

    New to planted tanks.

I have a 50 gallon tank that I am trying to turn into a planted tank. I just hated the fake look of my tank and loved the look of a tank with real plants. This is the before: And this is what I have so far: I have gotten a few plants here and there - hopefully I have chosen plants that...

    trying to understand lighting...

My 50 gallon tank is a four foot tank. I'm on a misson tomorrow to see what I can find for lighting. mfdrookie - is the shoplight something you mounted to the tank or is it hung over the tank? do you have a pic?

    Cory Cat Problem?

I have twelve Corys in my tank and they school together. The first six I bought were Black Sail Corys and they all hang together. A couple weeks ago, I bought six Emerald Green Corys that were pretty young (about an inch long a quite a bit smaller than my older Corys). The Emerald Greens hooked...

    trying to understand lighting...

I am trying to wrap my mind around the lighting thing - I am NOT good with electricity. I just can't seem to "get it". I have a 50 gallon tank and I want to start with some easy low light plants. I just bought some java moss, anubias and moneywort. The tank has two 24 inch hoods (I think the...

Good idea - I'll try that next time. I love my Python - it just saves me TONS of time.

    cleaning with plants

Thanks - I am hopefully getting more plants this week and was not sure how I was going to clean around them if they got thick.

    cleaning with plants

This is probably a stupid question with an obvious answer... I just put a couple plants in my 50 gal yesterday and plan on getting several more this week. I did a pwc and was thinking... how do you all clean amongst the plants (especially the gorgeous heavily planted tanks I see) without...

    taking the plunge :-)

I got three plants today. I got Java Moss - the guy that owns the LFS is so funny - he said he has not bought Java Moss in eighteen years - it just grows like crazy. I have a nice little handful that I split in to two chunks and attached to my driftwood. I also got an Anubias and a Moneywort (?)...

Got it. What about Vals and Crypts and Anacharis? Do they need to be planted or attached to driftwood?

    taking the plunge :-)

Thanks Crepe. So the lower the lighting, the less you need fertilizers? I can just put these plants in and they will grow on their own (the fish will fertilize the, right?)

    taking the plunge :-)

I just got a really cool piece of driftwood yesterday and want to go with a more natural look for my 50 gallon. I want to start with some real plants. I have been reading all of your posts and the stickys and want to make sure I have things straight in my head ;) I have a 50 gallon - lights...

    My little otos!

I have thought about a couple of these guys for alge... are they schooling fish like the corys?

    Cory question...

Someone else will be able to answer this, but I had six Black Sail Corys in my 20 long and they were fine with that (they've moved up to a 50 gal now). They all puppy-piled in the corner together to sleep and when they were moving around, they all swam in unison - they are such COOL little fish...

    need a couple more fish...

Well, maybe I will try to get another dwarf and add a couple fish to my Bosemani Rainbow school. Thanks for all the input!

    need a couple more fish...

ok... no Tiger Barbs then - that's ok. I really do like my gourami. I would be that he would like a girlfriend, but not really sure how to sex them... I thought they were all males at the LFS... Here's another thought - maybe not a good one - what about a "regular" gourami as opposed to a...

    need a couple more fish...

Everyone has settled well into the new 50 gallon tank. Right now, the residents are: 1 Dwarf Gourami (male) 6 Black Sail Cory Cats (unknown sexes) 6 Boesemani Rainbows (3 female and 2 male - I think!) The LFS has ordered six Emerald Green Cory Cats for me. I am wondering if I am stocked or...

Tiger Barbs. Must be the cat in them

My dwarf gourami has a HUGE personality. I hand feed him all the time. If he sees you in the room, he really pays attention to what you are doing. When I am using my Python, he supervises. LOL. He has to make sure you are doing things just right. I really think he enjoys the interaction with me.

    Aquariums in the summer

Thanks - a lot of good ideas for me. I might find one of those clip on fans and have it to use just in case.
