in my little 20 i just dump the 5 g bucket into there - a gallon's about 8 pounds so 5 gallons is gonna weigh like 40 pounds, which isnt so bad. Make sure to pour slowly if you choose this method because the flow of the water can really kick up a lot of sand or move around your gravel

what size tank are you using? this will depend on how mig your sump needs to be. a good way to build a sump is to build it as big as possible can fit under your aqaurium (if this is where u are planning to put it). follow that GARF instructions on building a tank, then ad the dividers etc as...

to answer your question is short - no i do not think that it is a sump is a must for your 50 gal. as loganji said, a HOB skimmer would work well if you ahve enough room for clearence at the back (most need about 8-10"). you mentioned that you did not have room for a sump.. have you though about...
