yeah, this is true.. i just wanted to see if there was a way of getting around paying $15 for a 10 lb bag that i only need a handful of

    the chemistry doesn't make sense......

i guess i should get the cc then; i will try the coral that i have and see how it works in a week or so; i have done 3 water changes in 2 weeks with no fluctuation in pH so i'm not in any rush i suppose becuase i know the fish are used to it because at least the pH is stable. poikilo: i am...

    the chemistry doesn't make sense......

oh yeah, pH in my tanks are 6.5 and 5.0; have been that way for quite sometime so i know the fish are fine, but i'd like to add more fish sometime and don't want to kill them due to shock. the 5.0 pH is in my 10g planted tank and i turned off the CO2 a while ago since i know that works as a pH down.

    the chemistry doesn't make sense......

i made a post a while ago about crushed coral being used as a natural pH up, and tried to read all the posts i could about it. what i read was that the crushed coral acts as a buffer to the acid; a buffer doesn't change pH though, it just makes pH more STABLE --- much more difficult to CHANGE...

    10-Gallon Starter, Please Help

your local fish store will also be able to provide tests for you, for free. however buying your own test kid is what you should plan on using in the long run so you can see the quality of your tank at any time

    10g Palaudarium/Terrarium - is this a possibility?

my 10g tank is soon to be empty and i'd like to make it into a palaudarium if possible. i would put something like neon tetras in for a small school and a crab or something that would have the land/aquatic capabilities. is this too small of a tank to make a palaudarium? i know it will greatly...

    Tiger barbs and Pictus Catfish

i have a few pictus cats; they're better in a school of at LEAST 3 (planning to get 2 more myself in the next week or so), but they are the goofiest fish ever. they need swimming room but also like to hide, one of mine hides in a cave and the other behind plants. they eat a lot but they don't...

    Calcium Carbonate = Blackboard Chalk

yeah, i definitely need to get my own test kits. i wonder if my LFS does KH tests. it must only be in request if they offer it because i've never been told what that is in the year i've had the tanks set up. i'll look more into it so i know if the crushed coral is a good idea. thanks : )

    Calcium Carbonate = Blackboard Chalk

when i do water changes, i only use a gravel vac, so there isn't as much stuff building up (to my knowledge). this is why i was surprised at the sudden tank of the pH. the guy at my LFS said to not use the gravel vac since i had plants and to just do water changes from water at the surface. when...

    Calcium Carbonate = Blackboard Chalk

yeah, i'm not worried for the fish in there now cause they're doing great, but i'm looking to buy some more and don't want to shock the hell out of them when i put them into the tank! i will try some crushed coral. i like the fish at my closest LFS but i take anything they tell me with a grain...

    Has my DECHLORINATE gone bad?

i bought it a few months ago i guess, it's one of the huge ones that should be able to treat a few thousand gallons. it's odorless when i use it, but it definitely has a stench if i sniff it w/ the cap on. my fish aren't affected by NH4 levels, and they are hardy w/ my pH, but i wonder if the pH...

    Calcium Carbonate = Blackboard Chalk

well, now thati think i can't be completely sure, considering a test that was flawed gave me my first results. i had my first test from a "5 in 1" strip at my local Petco which said both of my tanks were at 8.5 which seemed insane to me, but i thought "well i haven't done a water change in 6...

    Has my DECHLORINATE gone bad?

my dechlorinate is smelling funny. i haven't had it for that long, and i can't seem to find an expiration date, but it smells vaguely like a skunk. i believe it's working since i did a water change over the weekend and my fish don't seem any different, however i have been having HUGE pH...

    Calcium Carbonate = Blackboard Chalk

i know that blackboard chalk (uncolored) is calcium carbonate. i can i used crushed up CHALK to regulate my pH? i have read past threads and like so many others, mine has crashed considerably (tank has been established over a YEAR with no problem EVER). i have checked my county's water report...
