Some undesirable behavior in my Rainbow Shark...

You're right about it being a bit overstocked. I didn't think it was until they all started growing! The filter is a TopFin 10 (on a side note, it doesn't seem to flow like it used to, even though I've taken it all apart and cleaned it thoroughly). Picture attached (EDIT - it's the best pic I...

Some undesirable behavior in my Rainbow Shark...

I'll put up a better picture of the loach this evening. It doesn't really even look like white spots. If I didn't know better I'd say that part of his scales were worn off, on a spot about an inch long and a quarter inch high. The tank is a little small (10 gallon) and in addition to the red...

Some undesirable behavior in my Rainbow Shark...

I did a little research, and it's a red tail shark, not a Rainbow. I guess that these do get aggressive as they get older. I've moved him into a small temporary tank unitl I figure out a more permanent solution.

Some undesirable behavior in my Rainbow Shark...

Hello, My son as, among other fish, a Rainbow Shark and a Dojo Loach. The rainbow shark has gotten big (maybe 4") and while not necessarily bigger than the loach, the rainbow appears to pick on him. I didn't pay this too much mind, but the loach now has white along one side of its body. I...

Strange new water quality problem (acidity & nitrates)

I didn't get a Bala Shark for the exact reason that it gets so big. The fish do seem a little quieter these days, maybe due to being crowded? I didn't know that the Gobi was a brackish fish; what to do now? Anyways, today I'm going to vacuum and do a water change, and maybe add a little pH...

Strange new water quality problem (acidity & nitrates)

I went by the 1" per gallon rule. Before adding the clown loach and knight gobi, the four previous inhabitants have been living in relative harmony for about three months (although as the red fin shark has grown in size and boldness, he's now replaced the dojo as the king ;)). It remains to be...

Strange new water quality problem (acidity & nitrates)

Thanks for all of the help. I'll comment on the comments in order... I've been using distilled water since I set up the tank (4 months ago) with no ill effects. The acidity only went up with the switch to 'drinking' water (the stuff you buy in machines outside of the supermarket). Today the...

Strange new water quality problem (acidity & nitrates)

Hello all, I've noticed lately that my tank water has been pretty acidic and high in nitrates. I've been pretty regular about water changes, but don't vacuum the gravel (since I can't make my suction pump work well enough to do it). Can I get something to keep the acidity down? Also - I...

    Copper sulfide and bamboo shrimp

No problem - thanks for the help. The snails are still swimming around, so I think that tomorrow I'm going to empty & clean the tank, cycle it, then test for copper. I'll follow up on this thread in a couple of weeks to post how it worked out in case someone has the same problem. Ev

    Copper sulfide and bamboo shrimp

Do you think that even if the copper is in the tank for one night it will be a problem? I'd rather not get a shrimp than buy a new tank, not because of the cost, but I'll have a tank that won't get sold, won't get used, and will sit in my garage, which is like 'Sanford and Son' as it is...

    Copper sulfide and bamboo shrimp

Hello, My son and I are new to fish and set up a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium with live plants. After a few weeks we starting getting a large snail population. To lower this population, we got some CopperSafe at the recommendation of the person at the store. I just put in about 2 teaspoons...
