30G Planted Barb Tank - Build Thread

What is your tanks primary purpose? Why all the CO2 stuff? Are you keeping plants or fish?

    Water changes

I've come to the opinion that many folks on here do not know their [Moderator edit]from a hole in the ground! If you have an established tank, over 10 gallons, you do not need to change more than 10% a week of water, if that! (If you have a bowl that's a different story!) The saying that people...

    summer heat!

Unplug your heater! Fish can tolerate 82-84 degrees f! Keep lights off. I'm in NY also, tank (29 gallon doesn't get that hot). If small enough, get tank out of sun light. Bob

How often should I change my water? What %?

Water changes Ph and temperature are 2 big if's....it appears that people change water for the "heck" of it or out of habit....I can't imagine changing that amount of habitat for no good reason and perhaps damaging the system.

How often should I change my water? What %?

TC, apparently you didn't read my previous post! If you have a functioning tank, with adequate filtration, 10-20% is fine!

    warranty on fish

All TFS suffer losses, on a dailey basis. One of the tasks to be performed before the store opens is to remove the bodies. I am of the opinion that if you buy a fish, you own it. If your not observant enough when buying a fish, you get what you deserve. It is also very easy to kill a fish by...

How often should I change my water? What %?

10-20% monthly is more than enough, especially for an underpopulated tank. Comments about the more the better does not apply to h2o changes, as you can shock the fish! Bob in New York

    PH Problem

You are correct in that angels prefer slightly acidic water since they originally came from the amazon basin in s. america. However, most angels today are farm or tank raised and may have been born in unnatural water. A ph of 8 or above is characteristic of salt water, that is high in salts and...

Salt water, and fish in general kinda slowly died after giving my tank to my step daughter 3 or 4 years ago. Had saltwater tanks on about 3 seperate occasions, each lasting about 5 years. Have a terrific day! Bob

New tank....presently occupied by an angel, bala shark, 2 flame gouramis, 2 gold gouramis, a plecostamaus, couple little tiger barbs and black tetras (Petsmart had a dollar sale last weekend). If I find a geophagus and a Ram I'll probably pick them up. Over my illustrious fish life, I've had...

    high ph

Most cichlids from South America, including Angels, prefer slightly acidic water (6.7-6.9). Ph of water does matter in terms of overall health of the fish (and longevity). Bobz

Hi, I'm Bob and live in Orange County, N.Y. Have had fish (fresh, brackish, and salt) all my life. I'm 58yo, so thats quite awhile. I have also worked in several aquaria, including Rio aquarium on 26th St in NYC and Silent World in Connecticut. So I guess I know a couple of thing about fish (but...
