    rock overgrown

It feels like plastic when touching. The branches also really feel like plastic. There is so much growing that I took some out and let my wife touch it, she thought it was fake, plastic coral. Not sure where the rock is from though, I know for sure it's not Fiji

    rock overgrown

Hey guys, the LR in the center of the tank is nearly overgrown with plants and hard corals. I have no idea what they're called, but the green plant needs cutting every weekend as it grows branches that extend to other rocks at an alarming rate. So basically I need an ID for the green plant...

    good or bad crab?

I just noticed this guy for the first time. There was debris coming out of this hole from the rock and i peeked from under and this pretty decent sized crab (about 1/2 inch) hiding in the hole. He seemed white-ish and hairy. good or bad?

    twirly white objects

No idea what these are, but I recently noticed a bunch of them all around my biggest live rock. Any ideas?

    PH levels

If it's still low, make sure you have enough surface agitation. When I first started I couldn't get it higher than 7.8 (day or night).. then adjusted powerheads to face the water surface and over 2-3 days it jumped to 8.3, then 8.4

    Frogspawn Coral

I also just recently acquired a couple frogspawn heads and read an interesting article on how feeding brine shrimp and other meaty items gives better color to the frogspawn. Apologies but I didn't save the link..

    polyps look burnt

Thanks, I figured they're ok.. just not as pretty as in the store. The store itself has several Metal hallides hanging over their coral farm. I also kept the lighting time in my tank down to 5-6 hours for month to combat algae, but now it's back up to 8 hours.

    polyps look burnt

Hey guys, not sure whats up but these guys don't look as good as they did in the store. My water params are perfect and I have 156w T5 lighting in a 30g tank. All the other corals seem fine. They open and close normally, it's just their inside color that looks rusted.

    Aiptasia?

Turns out it was an Aeolid Nudibranch. After eliminating this one (who attacked the anemones in the pic the next day), 5 others showed up in other areas of the tank. Lessons learned: If it moves and has tentacles = automatic eviction.

    attack of the aeolids

hey guys, I have a 3 month old 30g reef tank which is doing really well. However 1 week ago I noticed the first aeolid nudibranch attacking my coral. I removed him, only to find another one a day later, right on top of my Zoas. It's now been a week and I've eliminated 6 of them. It seems they...

    Aiptasia?

One more for you guys tonight. Here's a sneaky one, it literally appeared 10 min after i took this first photo. It first looked like a little ball, not attached to the wrong but kinda on this loose algae you see. Then slowly it opened up it's tentacles. Seems to have white spots at the tips...

Spotted this little guy walking on my coral today. He's about 1/6 inch, t-shaped and what looked like small tentacles underneath. Anyone?

Need help with 10g sump build

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it I've actually read a bunch of the articles on sumps already, so I know how it works and whats involved at an early stage, I just needed some recommendations on specific items such as which pump I should purchase for the sump. I also need a protein...

Need help with 10g sump build

Hi all, Currently I have an eheim canister filter and I'm finding a lot of people saying sumps are better. Being a newbie to SW, I got convinced at the LFS to buy an eheim canister filter. It actually cleans REALLY well, but I don't want to deal with the constant cleaning to avoid the...

    Parameters Ok? Problems?

I had some ph problems recently which turned out to be a lack of surface agitation. As soon as I pointed my powerheads to the surface while keeping the lower tank still moving, my pH shot up from 7.8 to 8.4

    Live rock initial cleaning?

Here are some results after a few days: Ph 7.9 Ammonia 0.15 Nitrite 0.10 Nitrate 2.5 Ammonia and nitrite traces are very small, almost zero, even with small shrimp still decomposing. Are these normal at this stage? Also, pH is up at 8.2. Lastly, I got two koralia 240 powerheads and ready to...

    Live rock initial cleaning?

OK.. so no pH balancing. Phew, I'm glad I posted on here otherwise I would have wasted a lot of time and money. I asked this one a little while back but I didn't get a response on this one. At what point do I invest in proper lighting, after the cycling?

    Live rock initial cleaning?

Thank you all for your help, greatly appreciated! Last night I added some shrimp and other fish food and will wait for the whole cycle to process. I'll also be purchasing a additive to balance the pH at ~8.2 There is a couple very small hairy crabs in the LR, should I trap it with the glass...

    Live rock initial cleaning?

Thanks for your help! I have one last stupid question. After testing the water today, I got the following results: pH: 7.9 ammonia: 0 Nitrites: 0 Nitrates: 0 Does this mean the tank has cycled? Again, I started with 20lbs cured LR, LS and salt water from the LFS (which comes imported from...

    Live rock initial cleaning?

Thanks! :) Also where in the process should I start thinking about getting lights? My goal is a reef tank, but I've read that cycling shouldn't involve lights. I currently have the stock fluorescent lights that came with the 30gal tank (unsure of wattage) Last but not least, can I get a good...

    Live rock initial cleaning?

Hey all, I'm fairly new to salt water aquariums and I'm in the process of cycling my first reef tank (30 gals), fishless. I've done a bunch of research but still have questions.. I have two chunks of cured live rock sitting in my tank now, they weight total about 20-25lbs. I read that the...
