Welcome back to the hobby and to AA... I'm no expert but 5lbs of LR in a 55G does not sound like enough... My understanding is at least one lb for each G.

    Thermometers

I have two digital's of the same brand, one on each end of my DT. They are off by 2*. To see if they were the same I put the probes together and sure enough they were 1.5* differant. My chiller is displays another degree higher than the digitals. I just average the 2 and use the final number.

How do you name your fish?

My puffer is "Chompers", my large Maroon clown is "Starbuck" not sure why, the smaller one is "Little Buck".. My convict goby is "Stripe" as he has a stripe across his nose. I hade another convict that died, he was "Dot" because of his nose coloring. The rest look too much alike to tell apart..

For evaporation, the salt says in the tank water so when you top off the tank you only add fresh water. I was on a well system here about 10 years ago and the water was not that good. I would suggest using RO/DI, either from you own system, a LFS or at least from a water dispenser station like...

+1 on the test kit and the fish-less cycle. I run my salinity a bit higher than yours. Are you using RO/DI water? You may get some replies on the crushed coral...

    Starting again

Welcome back to fish keeping and to AA... The "rules" are from lessons learned... In the end, you will have the final say on your path to success. What size tank are you planning on? Lots of space to put one now! You sold the piano! What are you going to replace it with? A portable keyboard...

Welcome to AA The most difficult part is the wait for a cycle to complete. How did you start the cycle? Did you get a water test kit yet? What size tank? Any LR(live rock) or LS (live sand) used? What are your plans for the tank? FOWLR (fish only with live rock)? Reef?

    Turbo Snail

I drip acclimate my inverts for a solid 2 hours then put the bag in my sump for 15 mins to adjust the temp every time. It may be longer than needed but for me the time is worth it... I have had some snails not move for up to 2 days sometimes. Give it another day and then check it.

    sand from a beach

I don't know if he did anything to the water before adding it to his tank. I met him at the beach and not at his home. When I would visit his his home on occasion the tank did not look appealing at all.

    Sick Clown (yeah me again.)

Its possible to have one sick fish and the other one healthy. Think about when someone in your family gets the flu, the rest are fine for a time and then everyone starts to get sick You have very good water from your posting but you don't know about the conditions your fish were subject to...

? about blue damsels in a new setup tank 125gallon...

Adding to thincat's statement about your LFS, they are very hard to catch with any rock at all in the tank.. As a rule of thumb you should not add a fish you plan to remove at a later time... causes a lot of stress on the fish and the keeper as well.

    Protien skimmer Problems

Have you taken it apart and cleaned it? Mine acts up every 6 months or so and I'm not sure being dirty is the reason or if I just happened to unknowingly fix the issue while cleaning it out. It always settles down afterward though. Just an idea... Edit: Mine is a in sump skimmer. Didn't want...
