Power Outage. Sandy, filters down for 11 days

Oh Rach I am so sorry to hear! The rock is still good as well as the sand. Have you had the filter running with the crabs? If so and if its been running do a small water change before adding fish. If the filter sat all this time without power, clean in treated water and run. The issue is with...

Power Outage. Sandy, filters down for 11 days

Wow! Thanks for your service. Yes that is the good thing about the hobby...being able to restock after something like that. I have Malawi too. They seemed fine. I was most worried about my Red Parrot. He looked a bit stressed and started to turn a little white. He's fine now.

Power Outage. Sandy, filters down for 11 days

Sorry to hear. I wasn't prepared because I don't live in an evacuation zone. A tree fell and knocked out power. I went to buy two battery pumps and used the sponge filters already in the tank for bubbles. I didn't feed them and changed the water to add warm water every 8 hrs. I also had fry and...

Power Outage. Sandy, filters down for 11 days

I had no power for 11 days during Sandy. I prepared by using battery air pumps with the Pro V sponges already in tanks. I fed them after 7 days but slightly. The house was ice cold about 30 degrees so I covered the tanks with blankets and kept adding warm water every 8-10 hrs. My filters were...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Thanks, seems like I was doing that. Maybe there was too much load for them and I never rinsed them fully so the load accumulated. I put them in a bucket of water and the water turned black. Sign they needed to be removed immediately...poor fish.

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Well I think I've finally figured this out...but only after losing a few fish which is unfortunate. One tank 75 gal with one 12 inch fish finally cycled completely. I waited to see if the 90 gal would cycle, took fish out, cleaned both filters, changed 80% of the water...NOTHING. There HAS to be...

    Fish are sick with fungus

The ammonia is back! I cleaned the Eheim again and when I went to restart the hose shot out that gook again. Looks like it's from the hoses...looking to purchase another set. Too long to clean. Does the gook hurt the fish? They seem to be swimming nicely without issue. I have exactly 25 fish now...

    Fish are sick with fungus

I just checked ammonia and it's 0, PH is 7.0 which is low. I keep the temp at 81 degrees. I have one air stone and 3 sponge air stones so 4 total. No, don't have nitrates either. Tested all 3 yesterday all readings were at 0. I changed filters when I had nitrites but they disappeared about a few...

    Fish are sick with fungus

I am really confused. I've been trying to cycle a 90 gal tank for months. Finally after days of cleaning the filter, I have 0 ammonia readings but no nitrites? Now the fish are full of fungus. I am changing the water twice a day and it seems when I cleaned the filter (not the hoses) all...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Losing fish I am confused. I am losing fish. Just found one again this morning down in a corner. His body looked white/beat up...I know it's from the poor water quality in the 90 gal. Should I switch fish? I've tried switching filters once I got nitrites but it seemed to do more harm than good...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Update Well after all my mistakes and losing two more fish :( I stuck with the decision of changing filters and it looks like the 75 gal is almost cycled. Two straight days of 0 Ammonia and this morning 0 Nitrites. Whoohoo! After losing one of my favorite buddies, I upgraded the 10 gal...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Yes, add Prime and Jungle Clear Holdex. Did a 50% water change last night, checked the ammonia on the 90 gal and it was 0...then this morning checked ammonia again and it was 0. But no nitrities or nitrates...so I am confused now. It seems I should have nitrites if no ammonia since this tank is...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

OK, I see my mistakes. I lost a few fish and got scared. I have to do the water changes but enough to get rid of the ammonia/nitrites...just not take off the top 20%. I did the daily huge water changes in the beginning and I need to go back to that and just be patient. Got it...I can't...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Yes and it has a little ammonia sometimes...I let it run first then put it in. Also add ammonia detox. Think it's my not doing enough of a change. I am cleaning the gravel bed but then not doing a full change for fear of shocking the fish.

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Thanks. Large water changes is what got me on the go when I started this. I did them everyday even if I had to do two changes at once. I would do a large one, test the water then do it again if ammonia was till present. I've only been doing 20-50% but maybe that's not enough. OK, that's what I'm...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

Long story but my 90 gal crashed in Novemeber. The filter FX5 clogged (tried for 4 months to cycle but wouldn't) so I changed it. Then all the filters I was using broke so I had to purchase new ones. Finally have good filters but they're all new (6-8 weeks old) 90 gal 406 fluval and Eheim P3 75...

    Changing Filters to Cycle Tank

I finally got nitrites in the 75 gal for about a week now. Ammonia 0 and Nitrites off the chart. The 90 gal is still high on Ammonia and 0 nitrites so I switched filters last night and added water from the 75 gal to the 90 gal hoping to seed the 90 gal. I did a 50% water change to the 90 gal and...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

Well I added some Biozyme and old gravel from another tank that was sitting in a bucket in both tanks. Forgot I had it. I also added more of the old media to the 90 gal. Not sure what worked but the next morning the 75 gal had no ammonia and the 90 gal had very little. The 75 gal now has...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

Table salt and I soaked in untreated water. I put the white media in both filters so hopefully there will be cycling soon. The fish look healthy, alert, and bright. They're swimming around and don't look stressed as when I had the FX5. There was all sorts of fungus growing on them. OK, I get it...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

Thank you for the response. I have the cleaner and clean the gravel with each water change. I did save the media but had to soak it in salt because it was so contaminated from the filter. I soaked everything, changed everything, the hoses...I just couldn't figure out what happened to the filter...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

I got a bit paranoid this weekend and cleaned all filters. I probably lost the little bit of bacteria in there doing that. I've been adding bacteria once a week (stuff is expensive) as I change the water. I haven't had a cycled tank since last Nov 2011. I can't leave the high ammonia levels and...

    New Filter Cycling with Fish

I have three tanks, 90 gal, 75 gal, 10 gal (hospital) I am having loads of issues trying to cycle since I've added new filters. 90 gal (40 african cichlids lake malawi) 75 gal Tilapia Buttokerfi (10 inch) 10 gal (5 fish) cycled (2 parrots and 3 africans) I removed the FX5 from my 90 gal...

    FX 5 Filter Clogging

I lost a few fish :nono:. Once I removed the unit the fungus conditions went away. A friend said the unit probably wasn't functioning properly or was defective.
