55 Gallon w/ Leopard Ctenopoma yawning

I decided to post this video here because I am pretty sure there's an interest (albeit a possibly small one) of people that are curious what a Leopard Ctenopoma looks like when it is yawning. I originally started filming this though because my gouramis have been biting at my rubberlip pleco and...

    Your opinion of filter

I've also heard good things about Aquaclear filters because I believe they have a lot of room for media. I've had my Emperor 400 HOB filter probably since the mid 90s, the exact date is fuzzy. I inherited it from my parents when they stopped using their 55g saltwater aquarium and I set up a...

    Leopard Ctenopoma a bad swimmer?

I've got an Emperor 400 and a Penguin 350 in a 55 gallon on both sides so the current isn't too terribly strong and almost cancel each other out. Over the past two months he's gone from maybe 2.5-3 inches to 4 inches in size from mouth to tail but it doesn't seem like his pectoral or pelvic...

    Leopard Ctenopoma a bad swimmer?

My leopard ctenopoma has recently started to get bigger and I believe he is having a growth spurt. He seems a little tail heavy and has trouble controlling where he's going when he tries to hover. Usually when he looks down or to a direction his tail will fall over him and he seems to struggle...

Some type of goldfish for a ten gallon? Or some other type of fish for that matter.

I'm struggling to keep 3 Gourami (Opaline, Blue and Gold, and a Gold) in a 30 gallon because of how much they fight. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems like they like to fight just for the sake of fighting. You might have more luck with two females or even just one dwarf and a small school...

    FFE: For Fish Entertainment

I had a clam from PetSmart that would fill with air that my Leopard Ctenopoma enjoys playing in. He would wait for the big bubbles to come out and ride it up to the surface. Now that I think about it, I should probably give it back to him since he has forced me to remove most of the fish from...

    Hiding place ideas

I'm not sure what type of substrate you use, but I have pool filter sand in mine and just made large rock caves (to stop my Gouramis from fighting). My pleco made his own home out of it by digging out a cave under the rocks.

Will this heal on its own? (tailfin)

I had to move him to a smaller 29 gallon aquarium because he developed a second large rip below that one. He's now being housed with a much smaller female gourami that and a rubber-lip pleco that shouldn't cause him any problems.

Will this heal on its own? (tailfin)

I'm not sure what exactly caused the damage to his tailfin, but the gold gourami is probably the second or third dominant fish of the four in my tank (behind the African Leaf Fish and then the Red Tailed Shark). Mostly the African Leaf Fish chases the two gouramis, the shark chases the...

    Is my tap water safe?

I appreciate the help, I went ahead and did a water change for both of my tanks last night and the fish are suffering from no ill effects. I just wanted advice before I went through with it!

    Is my tap water safe?

I just had the water main break over the weekend and after replacing the whole pipe, the water in the house became contaminated with mud/dirt for a few days and I was wondering how long I should wait or if there are any tests I can do before changing out the water for my fish?

    Pleco wih ich?

I keep my rubber-lip in a tank that stays around 82 degrees and he seems pretty happy and active in it. Assuming it's okay for the eel, I would start raising your temperature to 86. The ich life cycle is more than likely going on in your tank and will have an effect on the rest of your tank...

Opaline Gourami - Phantom of the Opera face

Long story: I went on vacation during christmas and when I came back about 9 days later, my Opaline Gourami had a permanent weird blackening on the left side of the face, her appetite and behavior is the same though. Her feces seems to be either red or clear casings and she goes quite often...

Is this pool filter sand aquarium safe?

Probably around 3 inches, give or take a little. I'd really like to swap out my fake plants with real ones at some point, but I haven't researched that far into what I need out of my tank yet.

Is this pool filter sand aquarium safe?

The fluorite is for plants right? I haven't exactly found a good LFS in Alabama, but I'm in Wisconsin for the next week or so and they've got a much larger variety of shops they don't have in the south. Any idea where I could pick some up and what/what quantities I'm looking for to use on a 55...

    how to net fish?

I feed my fish and when they're distracted eating, I come up behind them and catch them with the net. It brings most of my fish out of their hiding places and I usually end up scooping the food out at the same time, so it doesn't end up polluting the water either.

Thanks everyone, I look forward to changing out the sand after Christmas.

Is this pool filter sand aquarium safe?

If it causes an algae problem, I could definitely handle that. Most of the tank inhabitants like the brown algae, so hopefully they'll stay interested and on top of that one as well. Any tips on cleaning it since it's very fine? Or changing out the substrate? I've got a cycled 30 gallon tank...

Is this pool filter sand aquarium safe?

I went to Leslie's Pool Supply and picked up some 20 grade pool filter sand that has a warning on the back that it contains crystalline silica that can cause respiratory problems if you inhale it. I had heard people recommend that this would make a good substrate for tanks and would like to...

    Help my sick Pleco!!!

I've had a lot of success with both the API General Cure and Tetra Lifeguard for parasites. The Tetra Lifeguard is the only one I've tested on a pleco though, but I believe the API one says it is safe to combine with Melafix and Pimafix or even other API products if you need to. The API one is...

    Quarantine procedure questions

I'll continue to quarantine the fish, I've always seen peoples guidelines for healthy fish but never seen suggestions for what you should do with fish that were sick. Thanks for the help everyone!

    Quarantine procedure questions

I'll continue with the quarantine then. On a similar note, should I take my other two fish out of the quarantine tank and move them to my display tank or leave them in for the same duration as well?

    Quarantine procedure questions

I've had my fish in quarantine for 3 weeks now, but around the week and a half mark one of the fish started to have something wrong with it (history here) and the only problems in the quarantine tank are the nitrite from treating it. It has been 16 days since I started treating with a general...

Red Tail Shark diagnosis help, possibly gill flukes

The ammonia is still cycling over to nitrite, but it is stalling at the nitrite stage since the medicine treatment. I am fairly sure she did develop ich though at the end stage of the medication treatment. I noticed the gold gourami flashing too, but I never saw ich on him. I was wondering if...

Red Tail Shark diagnosis help, possibly gill flukes

Just an update, she seems to have got almost all of her color back and is acting a lot better. The only thing that she is still doing now is flashing, which is possibly due to the fact that the nitrite spiked during the medicine treatment.
