In a heat emergency, you can put in a sealed bag with ice cubes. You may also want to run the aquarium light only at night when the temperature goes down.

If you don't want to take a chance with ammonia, you can use some flake food, a piece of raw fish or shrimp, gravel or filter media from an established aquarium and of course bottles of bacteria. No doubt the ammonia works well, but you can easily over do it.

Has anyone used Start Smart? It's new on the market and is supposed to immediately cycle an aquarium.

The pet shop was full of barnyard byproducts. In an aquarium that small, it can be difficult to avoid antisocial behavior, especially when it's all guys. The plants will help, and so will some female company, but you may wind up over crowding. Can you trade two of the males for females?

It's best to avoid medications because they may have side effects....like killing all of the beneficial bacteria. Most fish illnesses seem to start with water quality issues.

Under gravel filters were a big deal several decades ago when they were introduced. Not many people recommend them now, but they have always worked well for me. Maybe there is such a thing as getting the aquarium water too clean. After all, a natural body of water has a dirt substrate.:soap:
