    My first tank.

Nice tank! Tangs do need longer tanks (5+ ft) but you could get away with having a smaller one (1 to 3 inches) for now and upgrading it to a bigger tank later. Just MO. Yours does look bigger than 3 inches though.

    Algae bloom

You could try to scrape some of the hair algae off next to a siphon; it'll keep it from spreading more. Snails would help too; maybe some Turbos and Nassarius.

    Fish to Cycle

Why don't you cycle with raw shrimp? It's cheap and there's no suffering fish.

    Anyone else feeling the heat?

Not yet; mid 40s in the Chicagoland area.

What are some good soft corals i can get with the fish i already have???

They have to be cleaned well and regularly so they don't become nitrate factories. And sorry, +1 rehoming the tang.

    Clown fish host

Move it down a little at a time and see how responds to it new position.

    Clown fish host

If you wanted something real, I would go with a coral or anemone with tentacles. I would think the swaying motion is attractive to them. This is just my guess.

    Clown fish host

A fake one would work and then you wouldn't have to worry about lighting needs. eBay has them. My clown found a host Frogspawn but it wasn't immediate.

    Alternate uses for substrate!

lol Okay, how about filling up your nasty neighbor's mailbox with it? (If you have one.) And make sure you don't rinse it first. You could glue it to pvc piping and sell it for fish/shrimp tunnels. Leave it in your trunk for traction during the winter months. Sell it as "live" gravel on CL but...

    Alternate uses for substrate!

Couldn't you just rinse the gravel then, let it sit a month and then reuse it?

    Saltwater Snails dying after acclimation

Snails are less susceptible to changes in pH and salinity; it's the temp. that affects them the most. (Someone please correct me if I'm not giving the right info.) On the other hand, crabs and shrimp do need a long acclimation time bc of their lower tolerances to changes in pH and salinity.

    Ammonia?

It's not instantaneous. It would take a week or more to disappear.

    Ammonia?

I take it out after a good spike in the ammonia; before it totally decays. You could wrap it in some cheese cloth for easier removal. I also cut it a little for more surface area.
  19. trackfast

    Ammonia?

Yes, but this fish will still suffer. PWCs will remove ammonia and slow your cycle. What you want a is a spike to get the nitrifying bacteria going.

    Ammonia?

Get a baby tang 1-3 inches; upgrade when it gets older.

    Ammonia?

Try to get some store credit or sell the fish. Do the fishless cycle, get your own test kits and go from there.
  22. trackfast

    Ammonia?

Nice looking tank but IMO, it's too small for a tang. They really like their swimming room is what I've read. I've read posts recommending at least 48".
  23. trackfast

    Ammonia?

You sure bought a lot of fish. I'm sure the LFS said your tank was ready; they'll be ready to sell you some more too. How long is your tank? 5ft?
  24. trackfast

    Ammonia?

It may or may not kill them but they'll suffer from the ammonia levels.
  25. trackfast

    Ammonia?

I would use two raw shrimp to jump start your cycle. 2 damsels in an 85 gallon tank don't provide enough bio-load to get a cycle going quickly. Do the fishless cycle and test your water every few days. That's the only way to be sure; and it's more humane.
