I can't get my Nitrates lowered in my tank. Please help ASAP.

What are you using to test? Did you shake properly. Are you getting towards end of bottle? Never to much water changes. Just make sure to temp match as much as possible. You could try a significant water change 50% plus.

    Emergency Preparedness

Things to remember if u don't have a generator. Watch your water temp. Most important during a winter outage but could be of issue in the summer as well. If your stove is gas powered (like mine) putting heating water and putting it in a water bottle and floating it in your tank can help...

Ammonia and trites wont go down!

At 4-8 ppm I would consider a 90% change or successive 50% changes. I have read that excessive ammonia can also stall a cycle.

How often do you do a water change?

Without knowing how quickly your nitrates build it is hard to suggest a schedule every tank and fish is different.

    Going away

You can get fancy timers but just as effective and much cheaper would be any timer outlet from a hardware store. Plug it in set on off times and leave light switch in on position. Probably cheaper then anything at an lfs

Need help choosing a canister filter

Most filter ratings are done with no media installed. As you add filter media and debris buildup the filter speed will decrease. This depends also on what type of media you use.

    Done Cycling or Not?!

Ammo spikes first then trites then trates. When trites drop to zero you are cycled. Goodluck with new tank.

    installing inline heater fluval 306?

Inline refers to not in the tank. You connect the heater or uv filter to the hose going to or from your filter. It doesn't actually go inside the filter. With a fluval I believe u need to get another set of connectors to adapt the ribbed hose to a standard connection but it all depends on what...

Power outage!! How long is it safe for my fish?

Stir the tanks often. Tank filter media out and floating tank. The bb will die without water. Monitor temperature. If you need to warm it try filling a soda bottle with hot water (if your stove works) and float it in top of water. Hopefully you get power back soon.

    Lfs aquarium

I miss aquarium adventure. There was one here I. Long Island. It was huge and they were so knowledgable. It went out of business and was replaced by a general pet store with a decent amount of fish stuff but its not the same.

Seeking advice on what Im thinking

Best idea ever cardex. Also I ran two heaters and was glad I did when I brought the water level too low and one broke. Still need to replace it. Tip I learned since then. Put the heater horizontal at the bottom of tank. Much less fears of taking out to much water. And I think it spreads the...

    Beneficial bacteria

Also just popped in head. During water changes tht I do clean a sponge or my filter in general I don't not vacuum the substrate. Ill just suck out water. As bacteria can live in your substrate so you do not want to risk over cleaning everything at once.

    Beneficial bacteria

Can't stress that point enough. Do not change sponges until they are really falling apart. Also don't change two sponges at once. If u replace one don't change the other one for atleast a month. I have two sponges in my filter. I clean one every two months or so and rotate the position. How...

    Power outage

So sorry to hear about your fish. If you floated the bio filter hopefully they survived although the temperature could have gotten to them as well. I'd doa decent sized water change, and then stock small 2 or 3 fish, check water daily if the ammonia or nitrite spike you know the BB died off...

    Power outage

Good luck I got lucky again. Didn't lose power in sandy or nemo. My luck has to run out eventually. Think in gonna buy a battery operated pump or two just in case. Or maybe one if those computer battery backups. Set it to run one of my filters and the heater. Wonder how long that would last.

    Power outage

I haven't had a power outrage yet but I've read up on things to do. Warm water in bottles is very helpful (thanks gas powered stove). Also use something (gravel vac maybe) to stir water so often. Also I've heard you should take bio part of your filter and float it in tank. So atleast the BB...

    Heater question

During a water change (~50%) the other day I started to hear a sizzle coming from my heater. I immediately unplugged my heater (I have 2 in the tank) Since that point i have not seen the heater turn on, I'm not sure if it broken because it could just be that my one heater has been enough...

    Noobie water change question

I couldn't agree more Nathan. I ask for advice get 2p different opinions and then try to find what works best for me. Something I've found is no matter how big a water change I do I try to only actively vacuum the substrate for half and then just suck water for the other half if that makes...

    Noobie water change question

Tank is over a year old but I really fell off of my maintenance for a while. Over the last week or so I have been doing five to ten gallons every other day. My substrate was filthy so I really vacuumed a lot. I have a 55 gal tank. Right now I only have two fish ;-( I am on my way to get a new...

    Freshwater fish ID

I appreciate all the help and understand that stocking a tank is an explosive topic. I just want to do what I think is right for my fish. In my current position in life they are the only pets I can have and I do tend to grow attached. I spoke to a lfs (fish only) and they said I can bring him...
