i have a dilemna that i need some help with... i have a young healthy cortez ray and a long tentacle anemone in the same tank. up until adding the anemone, i was using two 36" t5 lights (each of the two has 2x 21 watt bulbs). this was fine for the fish, but not enough for the anemone... if I...

Problems with Nitrate testing with API marine test kit

also be sure that you are using the appropriate fresh water or saltwater test charts. with the API kits for example, the testing solutions are the same, but the color charts are different for fresh water and saltwater

Does my anemone and clown combo look healthy?

T5 all the way across for about 7.5 hours a day. The light is roughly 18" over the anemone. He settled last night and has stayed put. Seems fine, just wanted other opinions. Should I run the lights longer? I just don't want too much algae growing.

Does my anemone and clown combo look healthy?

I just bought this "couple" from my LFS last night. They had already been hosting when I got them. Is it normal and/or healthy for the anemone to be this big and open? Also, my clown looks REALLY still in this video, but as I type this he's doing his normal anemone fidget dance: YouTube -...

    Yellow stingray

i just bought a 5-6" cortez ray last week and am having the opposite experience. my little bugger swims around like there's no tomorrow. finally this morning (after owning him for about 5-6 days) I found him buried in the sand. now he's back to swimming like a mad man. my baby ray is in a...

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

do you not think that the filter by itself without live rock will support the biofiltering needs for the tank, without live rock?

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

next question (and thanks again in advancing for keeping up with my thread)... with the canister filter that I have already (eheim pro III 2075) doing a lot of the bio filtering, and the reef octopus skimming, what would you think about doing a sump just for live rock. basically no chambers...

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

you think I should return the damsels and try and cycle the tank with some raw shrimp? or will those damsels cycle the tank? could I just drop some frozen krill in the tank with the damsels? do you think the shark could have "infected" the water with anything?

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

that was a good read. I looked in to that method before adding the damsels. Had I read that particular article first, I think I would have gone with the already dead shrimp method. But, at this point I have 9 damsels in the tank. Your thoughts? Just let it cycle as is?

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

UPDATE: I just got back from the LFS where I bought my cat shark. They were very honest with me and told me that before I had bought my shark one had sold, but the other two had died (I bought the last of the 4). The guy that I work with (the shark guy) was supposed to be off the day that I...

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

I've never set up a sump before. Where do I start... HOB overflow (eshopps pf1200; rated up to 300 Gal) Octopus NWB 200 for skimmer what to use for the sump (for 100lbs of LR)? Thanks again!

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

so something like this for a HOB overflow (I know its a little large, but if I upgrade to a 210gal it leaves me room): Eshopps PF1200 Overflow Box, 300 gal tank, Dual - AquaCave what do you recommend for the rest of the sump set up for 100lbs of live rock?

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

they were using test strips correct? those are not accurate at all, and if you had nitrite, you had ammonia just before it. they were using API test tube system, same kit I'm using. they lied to you on multiple occasions. skimmer ratings are truly about half of what they really should be. in...

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

there was never ammonia in the tank. every time I had gone to the LFS their readings were 0 ammonia, but mine always showed minimal trace... because I had received the wrong chart (fresh water testing chart so the colors were off a little). so ammonia was never an issue. as far as nitrite...

Banded Cat Shark died, help please

He died tonight. A few things I'm thinking it could have been were low oxygen like someone mentioned... I do have a protein skimmer (hang on back reef octopus bh100ss) and an eheim canister filter, neither which put much flow in the water. I do have a power head that was located near the...

baby cat shark is red on his side and one spot on tummy

here's the daily update... the redness has mostly gone away (99%) but his dark brown spots have faded to a light brown and he's being lethargic. i can pick him up and he won't respond; he's almost stiff. but he is still breathing and moving around a little. YouTube - Cat shark a little pale...

baby cat shark is red on his side and one spot on tummy

24 hours later, ammonia has dropped to 0 on its own (no chemical help; i think it was just a small cycle due to the new bioload) and Mr Sharky looks 99% better. I think he just scraped himself on the rocks. he didn't want to eat tonight, but I think he's just full from being slightly over fed...

baby cat shark is red on his side and one spot on tummy

any guess on this? we've had this small male about 12" for 4 days. he's eating very well (about 3 pieces of either krill or lance fish per day). he's active at night. during the day he buries himself between live rock and live sand (he's made little tunnels to hide in. but last night we noticed...
