    Resolving sky high Nitrates

You might have misunderstood me. The old DT water would just be to Store the LR in while I remove sand prepare water. I have a brute trash can where I store my ro/di water in my basement, but still have to mix in 5 gallon buckets to haul up stairs. Will take me a day or 2 to make 60+gallons...

    Resolving sky high Nitrates

This is going to kill off all of the biological bacteria in the tank. As far as the LR goes, storing them in a bin of old DT water will keep the BB in them stable. Will I need to rinse that water off before they go back in the tank?

    Resolving sky high Nitrates

No crushed coral sand. Probably 60lbs of the live (or so they say) sand. Sand was disturbed minimally. Usually power head movement, or I might venture to low with the magfloat and hit the sand. What does a restart entail? 100% water drain obviously. Do I need all new sand though? As far as the...

    Resolving sky high Nitrates

Quick backstory. My tank is/was a 3yr old FOWLR 54 corner. In early 2013, I was blessed with the news of becoming a Dad again. It was a grueling pregnancy though with many weeks spent in the hospital. Mom and baby were healthy though in the end. In the mean time, my tank suffered as I had no...

    Live Rock

There's one more catch here. I do not know the sg/salinity of the tank yet. I wasnt going to buy a refractometer until my cycle finished. Does that value need to be correct for 1: my live rock to survive, and 2: for my tank to cycle properly?

    Live Rock

So I'm still cycling my tank. As I've read more, the more questions and concerns I have regarding my set-up process. I purchased 45lbs of LR and 15lbs of base from my LFS. It was the cheepest they had, but it was in a a large bin with a powerhead for flow and a heater. From what I saw, there was...

    Deciding on a Protein Skimmer

Alright. Thanks for the replies. One more question though. Why is it recommended to get a larger tank skimmer?

    Deciding on a Protein Skimmer

So my new tank is just beginning its 'time of the month' ;). Even though I have it up and running, I haven't chosen a protein skimmer yet. The sump/refugium I have is an Aqueon ProFlex Model 1. It recommends a Coralife Super Skimmer 65, and it says that it would be external only. This is due to...

The substrate is 60lbs of live sand. I also have 45 lbs of live rock and 15lbs of base rock. I inquired at my LFS about placing a raw shrimp to start the cycle, but was told it was not necessary due to the live sand/LR. Am I misinformed?
