Struggling with light choice in Canada

Am working on setting up my 26gal tank as a reef. I've been given a few suggestions on LED lights (thanks!) but am struggling to find them in Canada, or able to ship to Canada without ridiculous shipping fees. Would this be a good choice? Current USA Orbit Marine LED Light Fixture 18-24"...

    More "annoying" beginner questions

Thanks Doug! I'd say my budget for LED lights is in the $200 range. I do want to have corals, so would like to have some options with my lights down the road.

    More "annoying" beginner questions

Sooo... we just had most of our freshwater tank wiped out with a case of Neon Tetra Disease that came with cardinal tetras from LFS. In discussion with LFS, a well-run store that paid us back for all our deceased fish, has suggested that we dismantle the tank, disinfect everything, and start...

    ideas for a new tank?

I like the idea of more shrimp - probably not blueberry though as I don't know if they'd show up against the gravel and background. Would cherry shrimp hybridize with my algae shrimp? I think I'd read somewhere that some shrimp can hybridize with other species. I'm thinking a school of black...

    ideas for a new tank?

It's 24" x 15" by 21" high. I am at a total loss for what to do with it! I've always had fairly concrete ideas for what I wanted to put in a tank. The only thing we want is some more shrimp as they are totally fascinating. I'm pretty experienced with freshwater tanks, so pretty much anything...

Need help leveling 90g tank!! Gap under tank??

I live in a very unlevel house, so I cut a blue foamie (one of the cheap camping ones you get at camping stores or even Walmart) to be about 1" bigger than the footprint of the tank, and put that under the tank. I find it levels the tank out nicely.

    ideas for a new tank?

Hi fellow fish-lovers :) I just bought a 26gal bowfront tank for our boys' room. We currently have the bigger biorb in there, but I find that tank to be a royal pain in the butt. Found a great deal on an Aqueon kit ($77 CDN for tank, heater, filter, light, canopy and gravel!). I prefer AC...

    29g betta stocking

I've had lots of good luck with small rasboras in a tank with a betta. I currently have emerald eyed rasboras in with a betta. I have no personal experience with tetras so can't comment. Good luck!

    My platy is missing

Did you check on the back of your filter intake tube? I found a "missing" guppy of mine stuck to it the other day (still alive).

Just vouching for Big Als if you're in Canada. They had free shipping and a save-the-tax promo on a week or so ago.

What are the best nano fish?

If you're going to have a heater, Endler's livebearers (the pure strain are tinier than the ones crossed with guppies). I'm not 100% sure on the definition of nano, but they're pretty tiny <1"

    Fish ban in Canada?

Hey! It only gets down to -40 once in a while where I am! -30 is a tropical temperature to me during the winter!

    Fish ban in Canada?

Sorry for posting twice in a row. I just had to have a little look-see to see what I could find. Turns out, in Saskatchewan, there was a very recent fish ban. The ban is on fish that tend to get released into the waterways and take over native species. See: Saskatchewan bans invasive fish...

    Fish ban in Canada?

Mmmmm... we're making lots of changes about stocked and introduced fish in our watersheds across the country. I don't think that includes guppies in a tank though. We're talking more on the scale of trout and salmon. I laughed so hard though... thanks! I do know a couple communities in...

    Moving House

I just moved and wasn't able to take my tanks with me, but I did re-home the tanks and was successful moving them - here's my suggestion: I took the fish out and placed them in a bucket with their old water, all their plants, a battery powered pump, and a lid, and also saved about 75% of the...

    Share your mistakes!

Ahhhh... these are funny (in a not-so-funny way, of course). Fairly recently, I was doing a PWC on my 55gal, and my tank was up on the bar between my living room and kitchen, so I would just use the suction gravel cleaner from the front and loop the hose over the tank into the kitchen sink...

    favorite freshwater fish

My roseline sharks!!! I guess they're now my former roselines, as I just moved halfway across the country and found a new home for that tank + residents. They were little when I got them, and they flourished in my tank, their red and yellow colours were SOOOO bright. The best thing, though...

Ever really get attched to one fish?

One of my cherry barbs with a gimpy tail (looked like a deformity rather than an injury). I didn't realize when I bought him that he had a tail deformity, and I was thisclose to taking him back and exchanging him. But he had quite a little personality, and I quickly found that he was more than...

    I have fry!!!

I was away over the weekend, and I came back and have a bunch of fry!!! They're Endlers livebearers (the only fish in the tank), and the fry look to big now to fit in their parents' mouths. I imagine there were more but some got eaten early on. I'm SOOOO excited! I never got why breeding was...

The Green is Slowly Replacing the Brown...

Well I don't know how helpful this is because I can't really answer your questions about the algae & diatoms... but I get them too in my tank. I just take the rocks & fake plants out, scrub 'em off in dechlorinated water & everything looks as good as new! They build up again, but other than...

    75 Gallon Stocklist Help

How big is "large"? How about Roseline sharks/redline barbs. They do well in my barb community, are ~4", school and have amazing colours. I think they get up to about 6" which means I need a new bigger tank soon! (Am I going to get in trouble for suggesting them to everyone who wants a...

    what kind of schooling fish?

Redline barbs/Roseline sharks (Puntius denisonii) shoal very nicely. I'm still a bit confused on the difference between shoaling and schooling, but they are nice bigger fish that always hang out together, and it's really neat when they swim across the whole tank to see the red and black lines...
