    green hair algea

I've had major green algae problems before. My solution was (and still is today) to physically remove rocks covered with algae and scrubbed it off with a toothbrush. Very trying and tedious but effective. Then use a Diatom filter to remove as much algae particles as possible and then make a...

    Stocking question

Why would you want to move those fish? Moving fish from tank to tank is quite tough on the fish. Unless you have no choice, I personally would try to leave the aquarium alone as much as possible. It's tough enough trying to catch 1 let alone 4 fish. You should consider whether it's really...

    Clownfish eggs found!

Thank you for your advice. I think I will just leave them be and let nature run it's course. Besides if I attempt to raise them, I'll probably have negative results. Thanks for all those who visited this post.

    Clownfish eggs found!

I've just found Clownfish (Percula) eggs in my 60 G tank. They were layed on top of one of my water pumps. One Clown is guarding the eggs (I assume is the male) while the female is never too far. I'm relatively new to this situation. I've had my tank running for about 5 yrs now and I believe...

    Hows my tank look?

Good start for your tank. I personally would add a few more lbs of LR. Usually about 1.5 to 2 lbs of LR for every gallon of water. Most saltwater aquarist will agree. Just remember with SW aquariums, patience is the key.

Green algae in tank - does it pose a problem?

Depending on what type of green algae it is. Bubble algae is attractive but may overtake your tank. As long as it doesn't spread too much you could leave it there and just remove lumps at a time. Hair algae will spread quite fast and is a real pain. This type will overtake your tank in weeks...

Crystallized Salt on upper rim inside tank?

Welcome to the world of the Saltwater aquarium. Salt on your rim is nothing compared what may lie ahead. Routine water changes and scheduled maintence will keep your aquarium in good shape and remember to read the forums because when real problems arise, the veterans are here to lend a hand...

ideal sand-sifter goby for a 38 gallon tank...

Diamond goby is very good for sand sifting. Infact that's how they eat! Only problem is that sometimes their sifting and powerhead currents create a bit of a sand storm.

    Clown, Anemone & Trigger?

Most Triggs eat inverts so I wouldn't recommed it. Unless your anenome is somewhat large (such as a Carpet ) I would not risk it. Their size as well as their temperment are also a negative factor.

    madarine dragonette

I've got a friend that has gotten his Manderin to eat his home made food. He blends scallop, shrimp, clams, sole, a few cloves of garlic, dried seaweed, and probably afew other sea foods I can't remember. He feed it 2x a day and it as well as all his fish love it. You could try that. Now as for...

    Hair algae arrgghhhh!!!

I had an outbreak of hair algae a little time back. What I did was water changes every couple of days(2 -3 days), toothbrush scrubbing and running a diatom filter during the process. I found running the diatom worked really well because it collected all those hair particles I scrubbed off the...

    Anemone Poll

I've got a bubble tip. Got it for it's character. Love the way it weaves and of course my Perc loves it.

    Percula Clown and Anenome

From what I've read, you can't really do anything about your percula. They will either take to the anenome or they won't. Hopefully not the later. I've had a similar experience and it took to the anenome within a week and before I got the anenome, I had the percula for about 5 months. I...

    Okay...really getting tired of this...

Sorry to hear about your loss of fish. You haven't mentioned the procedure in which you transfer your fish into your tank. Are you using the drip method? If your are, are you making sure the water paramaters (PH, Salinity,Temp...) in the transfer bag are as close to your tank? All these factors...

    Algae slime or cyanobacteria HELP~

Yup, That's Cyano! It spreads fast and all over your tank in a matter of days. It's true that you can try to treat it with meds but the best is to try to solve it naturally. remember that there are no "meds" in the true sea. Manually scrub as much as you can and make more frequent water...

No nutrients but still got algae

As Steve said, do you have any type of solid cover like glass on your tank? With good lighting, the glass cover acts like a lid on a pot and keeps the heat from the heated water via the lighting from escaping. Something like the "greenhouse effect" Higher temps increase algae growth.

    diatom filters

I agree with Reefrunner. I have one and I only use it to filter out unwanted particles. You should only use it once in a while. It will definitely make your water crystal clear and depending on the size of your tank, you may only need to run it anywhere from 8hrs to 2 days. And yes you have to...

    Cyano bloom questions

Check your temperature. Cyno loves higher temperatures. Also try running a diatom filter once you are finished removing the algae. That will remove most of it's micro particles floating around giving it less chance to settle on sand and LR. Manual removal of Cyno is the best bet. As for...

    my tank is a mess

I've had a similar problem with that type of algae. From what I've read in these reply post, they've hit it on the button. You have to manually take off that pesty algae meaning taking out that live rock and scrubbing it off with a brush or something. try and scoop out the algae off the sand or...

    coral beauty

My coral Beauty was very shy for the 1st week after introduction to my tank but in about 1-1/2 weeks later, he's swimming out every so often. he nips at everything and he's even cleaned of a good batch of algae from the rocks. That is their source of food so don't be alarmed if yours does that...

What are some good books on a frist time setup?

If you are interested in a book with plenty of info on just marine fish, you should check out "Marine Fishes" by Scott W. Michaels. IMO it's a great guide on most fish available. It has all the essential info such as compatibility, fish size, fish care, feeding & foods, and best of all... lots...

Sorry about you fish but you're not giving us enough info? What are your parameters? (PH,Salinity,Nitrite,NitrateAmmonia levels? Temp?... Also when you transfer the fish to your main display, how are you doing it? What are the time intervals between placing in new fish? All are important...

How do I get coralline to grow?

I don't know about that Urchin. I had an Urchin and it ate plenty of my purple coralline algae. You should be patient and let the algae grow in time. Remember patience is very important in SW and good things will come out of it.

There is some kind of shrimp in my tank

Well without any type of pic or description, indentification would be very difficult. If it is a mantis shrimp, then you should know that they are know to be very "shy" but are quite aggressive. if you are able to "catch" it, then perhaps you could trade it in to your LFS for something you may...
