    Southdown Envy

I went to the local Home Depot, and I found two types of playsand: 1) Sillica-based sand 2) Crushed Marble (mined calcite ore) Which is better for a DSB?

BillyZ, What do you have running in your tank? I'd like to go minimalist on this first salt tank, and I would love to hear some success stories. thanks again

a cup of sand for a neighbor in need?

I wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful advice and help in getting prepared for our first fish tank -- this really is a great community. If you hadn't seen my other post, I just bought a used 60 gallon acrylic tank & stand that I'm giving to my wife as a gift. We just cleaned it out and...

    a cup of sand?

thanks for that information. i really am new to all of this, so my ignorance is pretty flagrant, especially about bioloads and tank sizes. i really like the idea of me being able to give something back -- the cup of sand I return to their original owners will have the cummulative biodiversity...

Thanks for such an informative response... it was extremely helpful. I was also wondering if I needed a protein skimmer if I wanted live rock/sand. Can I also have a filtration system running with the live rock/sand?

    HELP! I just bought a 13-year-old setup.

Could you explain how filter media produce high nitrate levels? I thought that ammonia leads to high nitrate levels, and that filters were supposed to remove all that from the water. Also, do I need a protein skimmer if I want to go the live-rock/sand route? Can/should I run both of the...

    HELP! I just bought a 13-year-old setup.

I've just purchased a 13-year-old saltwater/freshwater tank. I need some advice as to what I need to do in order to set it up for salt water fish and live rock. Here is what I got for $100: 1) black wood/formica cabinet stand and canopy 2) 60 gallon acrylic seaclear tank with two...

    Southdown Envy

Is it necessary for live rock/live sand to have specific types/quantities of lighting in order to grow? Also, what is considered "good" live rock? How much "good" live rock is enough to seed a quantity of dead rock?

    Southdown Envy

I wanted to confirm that non-Aragonite (non-southdown) sand can become live sand if properly seeded. Can non-Aragonite sand be seeded by live rock? Also, can dead rock be seeded by live rock?

    Southdown Envy

Due to the fact that there is no Southdown Sand in Southern California Home Depot stores, I am confronted with the choice of 1) paying $50 extra for packaging at the local LFS; 2) buying non-aragonite sand at Home Depot. Is Aragonite Sand necessary for a deep sand bed? Can non-aragonite sand...

    The Making of an Aquarium

That is one impressive stand. Do you work with wood for a living? I couldn't imagine putting together something that nice. Any ideas for something a little less ambitious? Do you have any pictures of your canopy? By the way, what tools did you use?

    The Making of an Aquarium

Can you give me some quick tips on how to make a sturdy yet presentable stand and canopy? If you have some pictures, could you post them? Also, what do you think about furniture from stores like Ikea? Are they any less useable than the Petco furniture you mentioned? thanks, mike

    The Making of an Aquarium

It seems that the local home depot in California doesn't carry the Southdown. Is there an alternative that can be found in the West for about the same price and quality? Also, I've been seeing complete 60-gallon salt water setups (some including fish) being sold between the $300-$800 range...

    The Making of an Aquarium

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. I've got a new question based on the last post... does the HD in LA sell aragonite sand? Also, does anyone know how much a used 60 gallon salt tank set up cost? ps: I plan on doing lots of reading on the topic.

    The Making of an Aquarium

My wife has been inspired by "Finding Nemo" and wants an aquarium with a clown fish along with others in the cast. I've been looking into options for the past few days, and the information out there is just staggering. I was wondering if someone could give me some direct advice about how to...
