Electrical Protection - Power outage breaker?

I have a question about electrical protection after outages. My local power company has been doing some work in my area over the last few weeks. As a result, I've had a bunch of short (less than 5 second) outages, which have played havoc with my filtration system. I have a 150G FW tank, and...

    Critter Identification

I'm setting up a new 150G. It's currently cycling with about 150lbs of Fiji live rock. My ammonia levels are off the chart right now---but, I appear to have some sort of critter thriving in this environment. It's about 1.5 inches long, gray, with some black stripes. Has a sucker-like mouth...

White 'powder' on water surface - any ideas?

I've got a 2-year old 150G FW SA cichlid tank that has what looks like white powder specs floating on the water surface. These just appeared a day or two ago, and are very dense. If you put your finger in the water, they'll adhere to your hand. Any ideas on what this is? Should I be...

It's a brown-grayish color, in my estimation. Algae???

    Cichlid Tank - Cloudy Water

My 150G Cichlid Tank (see specs in sig) is continuously cloudy. It's a mature tank, water chemistry checks out a-ok, and all the fish are doing well (and my convicts breed like rabbits, unfortunately!!!), but the water is a bit cloudy. I know that Cichlids require a lot of filtration (see my...

    How to use hydrometer

Ok, this probably seems like a really basic question, but, how do I use my Instant Ocean hydrometer? I'm brand new to keeping a SW aquarium, and I'm measuring the salinity for the first time. I'm finding the usage instructions that came with the device not very clear, so I'm unsure if I'm...

    Colorful SA Cichlids

Anyone have any suggestions on an SA cichlid (or two) that I could add to my tank to add some color? See my tank profile below.... My main problem is that with the exception of the Red Jewel, all of the fish blend in relatively with the background. I love the cichlids, and really didn't get...

How do you do water changes?

I use a Python, with two extensions on it, up a flight of stairs to my kitchen. Works like a charm!!!

    Eheim 2028 and oxygenation

So, I just installed a new 2028 for my FW cichlid tank, along with the prefilter on the intake. I had 2 AC500s on this tank, and they weren't doing an adequate job, so I bit the bullet and went with the Eheim. My question, since this is my first canister filter. I'm currently running 1...

    Aquaclear 110 question

I've got a 150G FW cichlid tank with two AC110 (500) HOB filters. My problem is that the foam insert, and it's mounting mechanism (the grayish plastic, u-shaped apparatus) keeps rising to the top and out of place. Anyone have any ideas how to stop this, or is this just normal behavior. I've...

    Crawfish

I had some plain old white crawfish in with my cichlids. Let's see...one crawfish consumed over the course of 1 month: 2 Red Terrors (3 inch) 2 Oscars (3 inch) 1 crawfish (2 inch) 1 pleco (3 inch) 1 convict (2 inch) It also molted twice in 2 months, one morning, I woke up to find him...

    Tank Bowing

Well, I broke down, and broke down the tank as a result. Took it back to the LFS, and they were nice enough to discount me on another, even though the thing was 10 months old. Their words---"It shouldn't bow like that--since it's glass, any bowing could lead to trouble, and since it just...

    Tank Bowing

Well, the floor itself wasn't perfectly leveled, so I had to play around with the stand when I set it up. End result--the top of the stand where the tank actually sits is level. There is no center brace, as there is on my bigger tanks...I would think there should be one there too.... As far...

    Tank Bowing

I have a 29G tall FW tank. About 10 months old. Just this morning, I noticed that it was starting to slightly bow outwards at the top in the front. Appears to be about 1/4-3/8" of a bow in the center of the tank. Should I be concerned that this tank is going to dump its water soon? It's on...

how long does a crayfish molt?

I've owned two crayfish in my career as a hobbyist. I'm down to one now, but I'll explain. Got them both at the same time. They both molted (overnight) about 2 weeks after I got them. They were about 3 inches at the time. About a day later, one attacked and pretty much consumed the other...

Q for those with Python siphoning system or similar...

For all my water changes, I've just been adding the water directly from the tap after approximating the temperature. I've got an artesian well I'm drawing from, so there's no chlorination to worry about. I check chemistry 3 or so hours later, and so far, there's really been nothing to worry about.

    Undergravel Filtration - Really Necessary??

Ok, I'm gonna post a question that's probably been answered tons of times here, but I've been searching the forums and can't really find an answer. I've got a 55G FW Cichlid tank with 6 small-medium SA Cichlids, a small pleco, and a small catfish. Current filtration is 2x Emperor 400 HOB (with...

    Filtration System Recommendation?

I'm in the process of some home modifications centered around the installation of a tank as a room divider. Ideally, I'd like to be able to put the filtration system in my basement--since the tank is being installed on the first floor, I have easy enough access to my basement. I'm wondering...

Opinions Needed on Tank Weight/Floor Support

So, I've settled on a tank. I weighed the floor, utilizing my low-tech method. We all bounced in place for a few minutes (pretty funny to see!), and wiith about a 2000lb dynamic load, no problems, not even a creak! I'm going to pick up a 110 gallon bowfront tank w/stand/hood/lights tomorrow...

    Puzzling Water Problem

Ok, so here's the latest news on my water problem. I broke down last week and ordered 1 liter of Purigen. I added 1 cup of it, in fine mesh bags (2) to my Emperor 400 HOB filter, along with 1 cup of activated carbon (also in bags). I removed the media containers from the filter. The change...

Opinions Needed on Tank Weight/Floor Support

Thanks, all, for the advice :) I think I'm gonna go the low-tech solution, and invite about 2000 lbs of my friends over and have us stand in the room for a little while and see what happens. Didn't even think of that one!! Jay

    I fear the worst...

I lost one of my crayfish a month or so ago. Found him about a week later downstairs under the couch. He'd traveled about 150 feet total, including a flight of 13 stairs! Of course, he was long dead when I found him...... Jay
