So I left my fish unfed while I was away on vacation for 8 days...

Bingo. I value my fish enough NOT to feed them so they don't die of ammonia poisoning. I don't know anybody who can come over and properly do water changes. So between fasting and being poisoned...I'll go ahead and choose the former.

So I left my fish unfed while I was away on vacation for 8 days...

...and they all lived! I have to admit I was nervous about that, but some people online said it would be alright. Since I have discus and GBR's, which are sensitive, I wasn't sure. Arrived home with quite a bit of nervousness...I wouldn't have been surprised if all were dead. Yet, I counted...

Do you think I killed my cory?

I think so too, just wanted a second opinion...

Do you think I killed my cory?

I was doing a water change just now, and was vacuuming the sand a bit. I went behind some driftwood and noticed one of my corie floating into the tube. I switched the valve right away so he didn't go through. Upon exiting, he floated limply into the water, dead. I'm not sure if he was dead...

    Well, wish me luck....

You can, but what is likely to happen then is that the most voracious feeders are going to get what little falls down from the feeder and the rest will get none. When I feed, I definitely spread it out and ensure that everybody eats. If I just dropped a little in, I guarantee that most of the...

    Well, wish me luck....

We really don't. We don't have many, if any, friends in this area. That doesn't say much for us considering we've lived here for nearly 5 years. I don't know of anybody we'd really trust to do that. Basically, it's all (automatic feeder) or nothing.

    Well, wish me luck....

Well I know I can get one easily but what I've read is that it's worse to feed them and have them pollute the water than it is just to not feed.

    Well, wish me luck....

I've heard it isn't unheard of them to not eat for weeks in the wild. So, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about this. We go on a couple vacations a year, so this will really be my litmus test for future vacations.

    Ram with community tank?

I have no problems with my Germans in a community tank. They have never bothered anybody.

    Well, wish me luck....

I think it's just hard to believe instinctively because you wouldn't leave a human without food for that long, and you wouldn't leave your cat or dog without food for that long either. But from what people say, the metabolism in fish is much lower and can sustain themselves over that amount of...

    Well, wish me luck....

Going on vacation starting Saturday for 8 days. I've seen a few people online saying it's acceptable to leave fish without food for that amount of time. So, to those who have asked in the past about what to do during vacation time, I'll keep you updated about the condition (or lack thereof)...

    Discus Profile

I tried it briefly and rehomed the angels because the temperaments just weren't working together for me. Discus need to be the kings of their domains and angels don't always respect that.

Well, we finally lost a GBR...in weird fashion, too.

I've worn as a badge of pride that we've managed to keep all of our 6 German Blue Rams (GBR's) alive for the past 2 months. Since everybody has posted problems keeping them alive, and the store wouldn't even guarantee them at all, I used this as an example of how well we were doing. Well...

So which fish should i get?

You could get a few glass cats if you wanted. They hardly move around. I'm not sure about tetras, as I've never kept them, but they're small and look kind of cool in a school.

    Should I separate

I never separate unless it's coming to injury or one not eating. It's nature.

    what kind of schooling fish?

I just call it all "schooling". Eliminates confusion for me. I figure the brain has a finite amount of room for storage of information, so I'm going to store what's more important about the aquarium hobby.

whats the proper way to dispose of a dead fish

That just might be a little irony...

    New guppies dissapearing!

We once couldn't find an angelfish for a week. Finally one night, my wife noticed something behind a plant. She jostled it a bit. And there, came a partially eaten angelfish floating dead to the top. So, while I used to believe in disappearing fish, I don't anymore. :D

    something i want from sellers!!!!

I think it depends on how much you're spending...for how much we spent on those fish, I didn't try to refuse his generosity....but if we spent like 8 bucks on some tetras, I doubt I'd really expect anything free. :P

    something i want from sellers!!!!

When I bought 4 discus, the breeder threw in 2 free ones to give me a proper school of 6. Score!

whats the proper way to dispose of a dead fish

So then it's titled incorrectly. Got it.

    what kind of schooling fish?

Glass cats definitely school...no doubt about that. However, since they're stationary most of the time, it may not be what you're looking for. My discus definitely stick together most of the time. I like it when they go as a group across the tank. It looks neat. My cories also typically...

    Vacuuming sand

Like another person before me said, it's cheap. We paid 12 dollars or so for a 50 pound bag.

    question about cycling

We did this when we started our tank. Let me tell it worked AWESOME. I will recommend this to anybody.

    Vacuuming sand

We avoided that for that reason. We got pool filter sand and it works great. Too coarse and heavy to be sucked up. I'd definitely recommend going with that if you're up for a substrate change.
