    Power head question...

I have the Maxijets in my tank and they have been great. Remember to get one that provides about 10x the flow of the tank size--150 in your case. I have also seen recommendations for two or more vs. a single to help with water movement. Just my beginner's input. Good luck, Jeff

    Moving tank help

Jester, I haven't gone through a move myself, but what I have seen here is to use garbage cans (new seems like the best bet) to hold the contents of the tank during the move. When you consider that you have about 480 lbs of water, 80 lbs of rock, plus sand, the tank, and stand, it's a pretty...

    New fish and QT

quarryshark, If I understand you, the nori decomposing doesn't affect water quality, specifically ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. That is interesting. I just assumed that was the cause of the ammonia rise in my QT. When I QT'd my Yellow Tang, I had to do more frequent water changes than...

    maxi-jets humming?

I have had occasional noises, once so bad I replaced it with the one I use for mixing SW. Mine sounded more like something in the impeller--if that is the right term. I rinsed the unit and it was quite again. Jeff

Somebody just let me know I'm right??

Schultz, I've only at this for about 9 months, but I have read several posts and many recommendations for the QT tank, if at all possible. In fact, there was a post by sicklidkid I saw yesterday that you may want to read. I have to admit though that I'm not sure if the dip drastically...

I have a Fluval 304 and have been happy with it. I followed the instructions for priming and it worked fine. Jeff

    Lowering PH Levels

The PH seems to run between 8.4 and 8.8. I am not using any additives except for the dechlorinator. Thanks, Jeff

    Yellow Tang has spot

Both sides, as though inside the fish. It does the the white stripe down the side as well. Thanks for the link. Thanks to all for the input, Jeff

    Yellow Tang has spot

I recently put a silver dollar-sized Yellow Tang into my QT. On occasion I have noticed a dark spot "inside" that is centered front-to-back, and slightly above the middle of the fish. At first I thought it was the result of the seaweed it eats, but I also noticed it just before a feeding. Any...

    Lowering PH Levels

I am in the fish add mode and have had my 10 gal QT set up for about 6 weeks. It has a AquaClear Mini (I believe that's correct), no substrate, 2 PVC fittings, and a heater. I am having difficulty keeping the PH down. I did not seed the filter because the original reason it was established...

    Sand sifter or something?

montero, I'm sure you'll get some more experienced people responding, but here's what I remember from my newbie research not too long ago. Without more information, it sounds like diatom algae, which is natural at this time and will eventually go away. I reduced my lighting and vacuumed the...

    powerhead size?

jackdp, I'm sorta in the same position as EBR. I have 60# LR in a 45 gal tank and I'm looking to add some PHs. My LR mostly is arranged along the back of the tank. Can the flow be blocked by the LR or should it have a clear path? Is the 10 gph/gal a reasonable guideline. If so, for my...

    Powerhead Positioning

I have a 45 gal and looking to and PHs to increase the flow over my recently added LR. I've read the reviews on PHs on this site, but am unsure of how many or what flow rate (GPH) is needed. Thanks in advance, Jeff

    Live rock question

fishman, I'm still a newbie, but I just went through this process with liverocks.com LR. I had a tremendous (4-8) spike of ammonia. I was changing 20-25% of the water daily, which probably wasn't enough. I lost one damsel before moving the second to a QT. If you plan to use your main tank...

    Help! I want to cycle!

Habitat, Welcome to the forum. If you haven't checked out the articles yet, that's a good place to start. I'm guessing that the link from Dewey gets you there. I just started my tank in November last year and have found this site extremely helpful. I only wish that I had found it before I...

SUBSTRATE: Can i use regular sand??

sicklidkid, I can't remember for sure right now which brand, but search in this forum. What sticks in my head is Play Castle, but don't hold me to that. I do remember a post that specified 1 or 2 brands that you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's. I plan to add more sand and it was considerably...

Thinking of getting into Saltwater Aquariums....

puffergirl, I'm fairly new at this and have found this forum really helpful. I'd continue searching/browsing the Getting Started forum. As gotz_potential mentioned, a big question is to decide fish only (FO), fish only with live rock (FOWLR), or reef. That decision controls much of the cost...

Is there such a thing as cheap LR?????!!!

sicklidkid, I have seen many posts here suggesting mixing LR and base rock to save money. The downside is that it will take a greater amount of time to achieve the same LR results. But if $ is your driver, I'd consider that route. highrocks.com has been recommended for base rock. If you go...

    Lighting and live rock

sicklidkid, From what I have read here, 2-3 watts/gallon is required to keep the LR happy. When I bought mine from liverocks.com they said 4-6 watts/gallon. NO fluorescents seem to be OK if you're not after a reef tank. If I understand correctly, the 2-3 watts/gallon will support the purple...

Starting Over....sort of...Fallow and QT help needed

getfilte, I can't help with the question on using the stuff from your current tank because I only have about 4 months experience. There is an article on QTs that will help some with the setup. Basically, it is a heater, filter, tank, cover, and optional hiding places. I've seen PVC fittings...

    Cleaner Crew Advice

I'm in the position to add my clean up crew as well. I have been trying to read the posts related to that topic. This is one has been helpful. Are the numbers scalable from one size tank to another? For example, I have a 45 gal (let's say 1/3 of the 120 in this post). Is it reasonable to...

    LR sources??

I understand your concerns. I just finished curing my LR. It was a fair amount of work, but if you can be prepared, you'll be psychologically ready. I got my LR from liverocks.com and they are great to deal with. The rock is beautiful, but like the other suggestions, have a place to cure it...
