What are your magnesium levels? You can also bring salinity up by dosing mag.. I've found my skimmer performs better with higher salinity as well.

2 times a day seems like a lot of buildup in my experience. Using a phosphate remover and cutting lights back should make a marked difference on your algae buildup all around.

Halides can be brighter than T5 but consume more energy. Find a fixture that will accommodate standard T5. You have more options to space bulbs appropriately and use reflectors. Also color options are more abundant with T5 over all other bulb types.
