    Freshwater build advice

Update: the free 55g I was going to get ended up falling through, however, over the weekend I've made a deal on craigslist, and will most likely pick up an 80g tank today... So hopefully everything goes well with that. Terrance, hows that substrate going for you? Also, I've been looking into...

    Freshwater build advice

I actually found and read an article about using an attached qt as part of a sump, but after reading and thinking, it just isn't practical to alternate from sump to qt. My only concern is that I feel like that space is wasted when not being used as a qt... Any thoughts? Still looking into parts...

Bulk Reef Supply Group Buy Feb 14th

I think I'll have to get in on the next group buy, I need some stuff that I can't get nearby... Although I need to make a BRS account still :S

So I was thinking... Is there an easy way to allow/block water flow through the qt? I'd love to be able to have the qt as extra water volume, and just block flow if I need to throw a fish in there for qt'ing... I'm looking at ATO setups right now. I'd love to set something up if possible... But...

Alright, how bout this one? Water goes through media, then into pumping section. ATS is separate from the sump system, so it can be removed, and won't harm anything if one of the pumps go out. QT will have an old filter on standby, ready to use some media from the sump if needed.

I intend to keep the qt separate and just move over some filter media for qt or acclimation purposes. So, ATS just hanging freely into water, and the water would go over the wall into filter media? Wouldn't the filter media be submerged then? I'll think of something and sketch a design soon.

How about something like this? Water goes down the ATS, gets pumped up so it can flow through media, them gets pumped to DT. Pipe below the ATS is for support only. After thinking about it more, I'd like a system that has only one pump, in case something fails... I'll get to thinking. But...

Alright... So maybe ATS first, then have it go through filter media?

So how does this design look? Kinda playing with designs in my head...

The only fish I plan on keeping in the tank in the stand is any new fish being acclimated, or any fish in qt. Thanks for the sump advice. I'll get sketching soon. :)

Cool. I'm assuming it would be easiest for me to just make the sump a giant filter... What would be some recommended filter media? I'll probably make a little sketch later of what I'm planning. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the guide, helped me touch up on some freshwater stuff. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I want to set up a sump tank. For fresh, is it just used for hiding equipment? I'll probably throw an algae scrubber in there to help combat algae problems...

    Freshwater build advice

Thanks. I think my mind is already set on sump tank. :) Also, my tap comes out below 7 ph, after a few days it's 6 or slightly below, with a tad bit of ammonia and nitrates. Barely anything, but I can't remember what I had tested. I'd love to hear some opinions on RO/DI water. I've heard...

    Freshwater build advice

Hello all! It look like I may be starting a freshwater tank soon... So I need some advice. I've only dealt with a 10g and 2g FW tank, so I know most stuff, but I have some questions... So I currently own a 55g and stand. The stand can actually hold the tank underneath, as I planned on having it...

    Hillage's First Saltwater Tank

I have some bad news... I believe my saltwater dream will not come true until after college. I'd love to set up a salt tank, and carry it on with me to college in 2 years, but at this point it doesn't seem possible. Plus, while I'm still at home, my mom doesn't really like the whole aquarium...

Ok, so 2 of the led setups Carey posted, or a 6 bulb fixture? If the LEDs will be enough, I'll probably grab 2 of those. Edit: The only thing I wouldn't like about those LEDs is that I'd love some actinics for my viewing pleasure... With these LEDs, I can't do that... I'll have to go look at...

So, what do you think about http://www.fishneedit.com/250w-metal-halide-pendant-lig.html with a 20k bulb? Two of those fixtures should work, right?.... Would I need anything else if I got these?

120g is planned, yes. If 4 bulbs isn't good, what should I be getting, 6 bulb fixture? Note: 48x24x24 is dimensions, if you forgot. :) Edit: At this point, would MH almost be better? :/ I'm not very educated in lighting yet...

They updated this to 216w on their latest ad... So is this something I should look in to? I don't know what bulbs come with it... Also, thanks for the pipe and gph info. My dad will be helping me drill this, as he has the tools for it :) Also, if I go look at the lights, I'll be looking at any...

    Hillage's First Saltwater Tank

Alright, drill it is :) The BeanAnimal overflow is designed as a fail-safe and silent overflow. It uses 3 pipes to use different methods of getting water to the sump, so it remains silent, but can still handle high gph, and the occasional emergency drain if something starts to fill up to fast...

    Hillage's First Saltwater Tank

So, while looking for a DT, I've been planning. I have a question which I guess hasn't been answered yet. As I posted in my original post, I would like to know what your opinions are regarding overflows. I've been planning on going with a BeanAnimal overflow, but I was wondering if I can achieve...

While I'm talking about skimmers, what skimmers to people recommend? This is for a planned 120g + 55g sump. Also, to recap above posts, I'd love opinions on the lighting special my LFS has, plus the skimmer-less startup...
