    Next fish to get? Rams?

Okay, the tank has been going for 6 weeks. The numbers have been stable for several weeks, and all is well. According to the maximum expected sizes of my fish, they will be 20.8 inches. I think I will go for some Rams next, and that should just about max out the tank. I like rainbowfish...

    Plant trimming tool?

I have some water weed that is getting quite tall. What kind of tool should I use to trim it? Is there a "fish-safe" trimmer? Or do I use any old garden trimmer?

    Feeding upside down catfish

I've read that upside down catfish will swim to the surface for feeding, but mine seem to stay on the bottom during suppertime. I usually feed flakes to all the fish, and once or twice a week they all get freeze-dried bloodworms or frozen brine shrimp. The other fish seem to eat all the food...

Flake food - does it matter?

I received a huge 6.8 oz can of flake food from a relative. It's Wardley's Tropical Flakes, purchased from Meijer. I have no idea how old it is. It is almost full. The LFS sold me a 1 oz can of TetraMin. They look pretty much the same. Does it matter what kind I give the fish? Does the old...

    Didn't rinse substrate

Ok, I admit it, I made a mistake. The LFS recommended Terralit and Flourite for my tank when I told them I was merely considering live plants. I thought that, since it wasn't plan old gravel, that I didn't need to rinse it. It's okay now, but whenever I rearrange any gravel, I stir up a small...

    Starting over (almost)

I had started my 29 gal tank two weeks ago with 2 gold gouramis and 2 paradise fish. The water readings were very stable (0 amm, 0 nitrite, 12.5 nitrate) for over a week, so a couple of days ago, we added 3 ruby barbs. However, the paradise fish were too aggressive toward each other and the...

Wash hands before working in tank?

What's the safe way to clean hands before putting them in the aquarium? If I wash my hands with soap, won't that poison the water? If I don't use soap, then won't I contaminate the water with whatever is on my hands (lotion, germs, dirt, grease, etc.)?

New tank, new fish, surprising test readings

I have a new 29 gal tank. It was filled last Monday. Over the past few days, I did a couple of water tests and the results were fairly consistent: pH=8.0 KH went from 4 to 3 GH went from 7 to 9 Ammonia=0 NO2=0 NO3=0 Last night (Thursday), I put in two gold gouramis, two paradise fish, and...

    Which fish?

I'm just getting started. I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank. I'd like some medium-sized fish and possibly a small school of small-to-medium fish. I'm considering a pair of kribensis, but I don't know what to put with them. I realize that saltwater fish are much more colorful, but I'd like...

    Too much gravel?

I'm just starting. I have a 29 gallon tank and I've just filled it with water. I did a pretty cool job of decorating the tank (if I say so myself). I'm using a Penguin 170 Bio-Wheel filter. Right now I just have two artificial plants, but I may someday add real plants. So the bottom of the...

    Test kits: dangerous?

I went to two LFS and both recommended the TetraLab test kit. When I got it home, I noticed the big label that says "KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER". 8O I asked one of the LFS about that and they just shrugged it off with "that's just something California requires." Well, I just filled my tank for...
