Need answer ASAP, bulbs for planted tank

Not sure on which bulbs but that is a crap load of light for a 55 if its high output... Co2 will be required if you don't want algea to be the centerpiece.

    New tank with live plants

For sure need a new fixture. Your looking for a t5 high output fixture with at least four 54 watt bulbs for that kind of wattage but pressurized co2 and a lot of plants will be a must for a tank with that much light.

Can my live plants survive salt treatment for Ich?

Salt and live plants don't mix... I would avoid the salt if you do not want to risk the plants. I used heat only for two weeks at 86 degrees and beat my ick.

    Water Changes

In a planted tank you will need to replace trace minerals that the plants need for growth which fresh water accomplishes.

How can I cool my aquarium?!

I would unplug the heater till it cools. My aqueon heater for example is 6 degrees off. I set it to 74 to maintain 80 degrees

    swapping gravel for eco-complete

20 lbs should be more than enough. You may have a small mini cycle afterwards but do a 50 percent water change everyday for a week and you should be good to go. Just monitor your water closely for a bit.

Do you have a lid on the tank? Heater not calibrated?

    ich ickyness

Ick doesn't like warm temps.. it just speeds up the life cycle making the cyst fall off the fish faster, making treatment effective in a shorter amount of time. I raised my temp to 86 and was ick free in two weeks.

    Determining Water Change Schedule

Water changes are needed, in an established tank with normal conditions, when nitrates surpass the disired level. You can test nitrates often to get a feel for how long you can go between water changes or opt for a 30 to 50 percent change weekly.

    ich ickyness

Depends on the fish. I kept mine at 90 f for two weeks with nothing bad happening. I have barbs and loaches.

    brownish algae

That's diatomes. A Google search will tell you everything you wanted to know about it but its most common in newly established tanks and goes away as quickly as it showed up.

    Melting away! Help!

A test kit is really a required thing when getting serious with aquaria. Spend the 20 to 30 bucks if possible... You won't regret it. As far as levels... 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and under 20 nitrates is what you should aim for but I do not test or fret about ph so I'm unsure about that.

    Melting away! Help!

It will come back. It was probably grown above water and will lose those leaves, growing new submersed leaves though knowing your setup would help to rule out other problems

    filters and water quality

Not sure why you have the drop but it wouldn't hurt your fish. This happens to everyone after a water change. But 40 ppm is 20 too high imo.

Filter recommendations for a 20 gallon tank?

Go with Aquaclear. It's a very respected brand. The Aquaclear 50 would do fantastic on your tank.

    Algae Eaters

That jack wagon is seriously uneducated in the subject. Hot water and any untreated water for that matter going through the filter will kill the bacteria that is needed to sustain good water. Just rinse it in your old tank water and put back in. Once it falls apart, before throwing it out put...
