    Driftwood Cons & Pros?

Having driftwood in your aquarium gives your fish security and a natural feeling environment to live in. The tannins that are released are harmless but to help reduce them soak the wood in a bucket or something and change the water daily until the water stops being too brown.

My First Attempt at an Amazon River Basin Biotope

Very cool, Need some driftwood though. Especially for that beautiful pleco they love wood to graze on.

When does driftwood stop discoloring water?

Every type of wood is different. Malaysian and mopani can leech for months and keep your water tea color the whole time. Where manzanita will usually barely leech enough to change water color at all. It's all a matter of picking the right wood or how much work your willing to put in.

    How to prepare driftwood

no need to boil it. If it is leeching a lot of tannins overnight when you flush your toilet you should see discoloration of the water coming into the bowl. When this flushes clear after overnight soaking you should be good.

    How to prepare driftwood

only helpful if it is small, but yes a good idea for small pieces.

    How to prepare driftwood

Best thing to do is just soak it changing the water at least every other day to release the excess tannins. If it floats place a rock on top. If it is mopani or other african root type wood it will take a long time.

    New tank

Above someone mentioned adding limestone Terrible wrong advice! Limestone will raise your PH. Driftwood will only do so much to lower your PH and as stated the chemicals are really not very stable or reliable. The best way is to mix your water with RO water. You can control your PH better and...

    Driftwood

If the slime is growing on the wood it is normal. If it is coming out of the wood itself something is not right. Try to only use hard woods and make sure it was completely dried out before you started soaking it.

    Does Driftwood Really lower Ph?

It's the tannins that lower the PH Pre soaking and boiling help a lot with new wood. Old wood won't have as much of an effect. Also the type of wood makes a huge difference. A piece of malaysian can turn your water to tea to where a piece of manzanita you can barely tell usually. Generally...
